Guest guest
----- Original Message ----- From: Lin >I need to get with a good therapist. He has done some therapy where the therapist poured pancake syrup on his hands and he had to not go wash his hands...he did that but he told me it's not the same as when he's home or not in the theraputic situation that the OCs just come..sometimes he can be very dirty and not bothered or sometimes he OCs and he feels sticky and has to wash so the therapy did not seem realistic to OCD to him..I don't know, all I know is he needs help. *****Hi Lin, I know sometimes situations in a therapist's office don't provoke the same anxious feelings as " real-life " exposure. Sometimes a therapist is willing to meet the child where the child is having problems at do exposures there, you might ask your son's therapist if he would be willing to do this. Or another thought, if your child is worried about germs and is avoid restrooms for example, the therapist could conduct therapy in the building's restroom. Just an example of a way to make exposures more on-target for your son, whatever triggers the need to wash is what he should be exposed to. You are right that if your child's anxiety is not being triggered during exposures in the office, then he can't do the work of acclimating to the anxiety in order for it then to fall with repitition. In any case I would be sure to let the therapist know that you have concerns that your son is not benefiting from the therapy as expected. Take care, Kathy R. in Indiana
