Well this is encouraging to me. I am down 8 pounds from all that eating I have been doing. On the other hand a lot of people find it funny that I can increase my food intake and lose weight. They think I am crazy when I say I do not get hungry, so I don't eat, so I gain weight. By eating the 1500 calories a day I am really doing it. 2 weeks = 8 lbs. Wahoo! And I actually made 1600 calories 3 times now! Which is what they say I need to eat.

If I can make it through one more week I will be doing better then I did before, as I usually give up in the third week.

All of us are fighting our own issues. I am glad we are encouraging you Steve as you sure encourage us.

I think people who have their stomachs stapled eat a little at a time but eat frequently throughout the day. So they may actually end up eating healthy amounts if done correctly. If I sat down and ate 1500 or 1600 calories at one time (the mind boggles!) it would not do me any good I am sure. But eating that amount over the period of a day rather then simply eating 5 or 6 hundred once a day is the key. The research they have now says something to the effect that to lose weight healthily you need to eat a minimum of 1200 calories spread throughout the day. I did that the first week, and lost 5 pounds. The second week I was moved up to 1600 calories a day and usually ate about 1500 to 1550. I lost 3 more pounds. I am halfway through my third week now, and have actually ben making it up to the 1600 calories a day.

With the people in Germany, I am sure their caloric intake was something close to less then 100 a day. That is actual starvation. The same with anorexics, I understand. At that level of starvation there is nothing to store. If I eat 5 or 6 hundred calories a day, my body has sufficient nutrition to just think it is going to starve and so it stores it.

That is the way I understand it. I may have something wrong in there. If anyone knows more please say so.

Beverly - I have found that it's best (for me) to vary my days walking - walk 5 days, skip one...etc. to keep my metabolism up...otherwise, if I do the same thing everyday, my metabolism adjusts and then it takes more and more to keep it going. Does that make any sense? Bethbowens@... wrote: the 12th dayTo: thefatmanwalking_group

well it was supposed to be my 12th day in a row of excercising and it
didnt go well. That makes a lot of sense, Beth. Our muscles become become more

efficient as we exercise. As we build the muscles to do one exercise

it becomes easier for us. Many people recommend varying the exercise

routines to work different muscles. I love biking but try to get in

some walking, weight lifting, etc whenever I can.

When I was in Weight Watchers they often recommended to eat a little

more if your weight loss had stalled and you had been eating less than

the allotted points (calories) for your weight range. New members

were often eating less expecting the weight to come off faster. If

the body doesn't have proper nourishment it will slow down the

metabolism causing weight loss to slow down or stop altogether. It's

really hard to wrap our heads around this advice but it does work.

Congratulations on your weight loss.

In my case I do quite a bit of walking, due to not dirving and the

public transportation system is not that good.

I try to change my routein as much as possible. I may have to

frequently go from point A to point B that may be 3 blocks in one

direction and 2 blocks in another. I try not to take the same 3

blocks then the same 2 blocks but may be 3 then 2 one day, the next

the 2 block direction (first) then the 3 next time part of the first

direction then either part or all of the second then copleting the

first direction. Or it may be as simple as walking on the other side

of the street than normal.

I must confess, I would be one of those people that don't understand that advice. Did people at Auschwitz stop losing weight because they weren't getting enough food? Anorexics continue to lose weight. Not that I'm saying that starving yourself is a good thing, but it has never made sense to me when I've seen plenty of pictures of human living skeletons. Obviously, being a living skeleton is unhealthy, so I'm not advocating starving yourself.

Another thing that is hard for me to wrap my mind around is that if you have your stomach stapled, and can only eat a couple tablespoons of food at a time, that is okay. But, if you do that without getting your stomach stapled, it's unhealthy. Why???

Just a couple of my own thoughts.

The bad thing for me is that I have know it most of my life and still did it...excuse was just did not have time

It is very annoying to me to stop in the middle of something to go eat, especially when I am not hungry. I am a person who is doing something all the time, whether working, playing with grand kids, helping friends or family, walking or backpacking, or just reading a book. To spend time fixing and eating food is an irritation. When my kids were growing up I cooked, canned, gardened, etc...I was thin! lol My kids never tasted store bought jam till they left home. Or store bought canned fruit and vegies.

But I ate with them and I made them eat regularly!

WOW Jane...that's GREAT !! Keep up the good work!! Since I have been using SparkPeople.COM my weight is coming off. It's such a great feeling!!. They say I should eat between 1470-1820 calories. It doesn't seem possible that you can lose weight by eating more...but I guess it's all in the ratio of calories/carbs/fat/protein. My blood glucose readings are also down.

Steve...keep up the great work!! You are almost there!! You truly are an inspiration. I keep thinking if Steve can move his body, I have no excuses.

Jane,

I don't have any expertise on this stuff, but your explanation does

sound logical. Though I'm not a big fan of those t.v. gurus like Dr.

Phil, I happened to come across him on some program a while back

where he was bawling out a very overweight young woman for not eating

breakfast. She was telling him that she only ate one meal a day, and

couldn't understand why she failed to lose weight. He said that not

eating breakfast was actually causing her body to shut down for half

the day and that she couldn't lose weight that way.

What you are doing now sure seems to be helping you lose weight;

that's great!

Your explanation of how people who have their stomach stapled is correct. I have a friend who had the procedure done and she ate small bites of food practically all day long.

Unfortunately those on the starvation diets lose more muscle than fat after a prolonged time. That's why many anorexic's develop heart problems since the heart is one of the largest muscles in the body. Most diets don't recommend going below 1200 calories per day. It may vary slightly from diet to diet. There are the very low calorie diet programs that go below this number but they're medically supervised and the people take extra supplements to provide the body with the needed vitamins. I've known a couple people who did these for health problems. One of the biggest problems associated with them is they have problems getting back on a regular diet and often gain a lot of the weight back...Remember Oprah and her liquid diet?
