Guest guest
I have a son with Aspergers entering high school in the fall. I have tried to get him exempt from PE for a variety of reasons but can't seem to find a way around the state mandate that he take 2 years of PE. If he attends some sort of athletic classes outside of school for at least 5 hours a week he can be exempt but that would't be feasible. He has qualified for adaptive PE but I am told there's no way around getting out of it all together. It is really a negative experience for him and because he is now required to take an extra math class (double blocked)he has to give up his elective (theater) which is the only class he absolutely adores. I would rather him give up PE. If anybody has faced this and had success in exemption from PE please let me know. I know physical activity is important but I am sure I am not the only one who knows that PE is a challenge on many, many levels. Also, he is required to take foreign language. I am wondering how other students with Aspergers have done with foreign language. I am thinking that since it is a lot of auditory learning (listening and repeating, etc) as opposed to hands-on or visual it might be difficult (my son is not an auditory learner). thanks for any input!
