On Friday my chornic diverticulosis turned into diverticulitis-don't know why- ( an inflamation of the diverticulli I have on the left side of my guts) It was extremely painful, so much so my daughters rushed me to the ER. I was six hours there, while blood and urine tests were perfomed and the results came in. At the same time I was given a saline solution and painkillers through an IV because I had become dehydrated and the pain was so bad. My white blood cell count was high, more than normal. Then two surgeons came to see me and I had a belly and chest scan. In the end , it turned out I have an infection, and I was given antibiotics and antiinflamatories and sent home feeling like a rag. Luckily, no surgery. Have to go back on Monday for a control. Now the IMPORTANT question is: can I go on drinking KT? Does anybody know anything about KT and diverticulitis? I don't think this malady has ever been mentioned in the mails. I would appreciate any information you can give me. Blessings to everybody, Terry Mc Queen __________________________________________________ Correo Yahoo! Guest guest
True Annie, nothing can be done, but when I live on a low-fiber diet, contrary to many beliefs, my diverticulosis does not turn into divericulitis (that's the bad thing). I went to a control consultation with the surgeons today, and I feel much better after my horrible FRiday bout, but I'm still on meds until next Friday when I have another ER control.I've been told I can go back to work. Feeling better for me includes my diet and the least stress possible. Blessings, Terry blondy escribió: Hi terry What are they going to do too fix you' " re diverticulitis? Guest guest
Hi there, I looked up diverticulosis/diverticulitis in Jethro Kloss's Back to Eden book. While I have typed in the full passage below, the bumpersticker message from it is that you need more fiber in your diet. If you eat more fiber, it will (in time) take care of your problem. There may also be other information on your issue in my collection of do-it-yourself alternative health books, I'll look it up if you want me to. p658-9 Back to Eden " Diverticulosis is a very common disorder of the large intestine that is found in Western countries. In fact, it is present in nearly half the population over the age of 50 years. Diverticula are pockets that are formed on the outside of the colon when the high pressure in the colon forces apart the lining of the colon through a weak place in the wall. Everyone has these areas of weakness. They are located where the small blood vessels that nourish the intestine pass through the wall. These pockets, which look like bubbles on the outside of the colon ..., may connect with the colon by a rather narrow opening. The pockets may be large or small, few or many, and are one of the most common causes of bleeding from the intestines. They are most numerous in the portion of the colon that is located in the left lower abdomen, but they do not occur in the rectum. Diverticulosis is rarely seem in some parts of the world, such as Africa, where a high-fiber diet and large stool volume are typical. Most people who have diverticula never develop any serious problem, although some may have a nagging lower abdominal pain, cramps, or suffer from constipation. Some may have a " spastic " or " irritable " colon. In about 20 percent of persons with diverticulosis, an infection with an abscess or even a perforated diverticulum may occur. If this should happen, the term diverticulitis is used, and at times it may develop into a life-threatening situation where surgery is urgently needed. There are usually fever and severe pain in the left lower abdominal regoin. About 200,000 persons are hospitalized each year in the United States with diverticulitis. It has been shown recently that not only will a high-fiber diet prevent the formation of diverticula, but it will also improve the symptoms of diverticulosis that have already developed. Guest guest
Hi, thanks so much for your answer. I had the symptoms described, cramps, bad constipation in spite of drinking KT, and very severe pain in the lower left abdominal region. I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome as well. I am much better today (though still taking antibiotics to control de inflammation) and I was even able to go back to work in spite of a nagging pain in the lower abdomen. The point is that my family has a history of diverticulosis, my mother died at 63 of perforated diverticula and my sister also has diverticulosis. Strangely enough, the fiber diet does not work for me. JUst a little too much fiber sets off an attack. My white blood cell count was very high, indicating an infection, that's why I had scans and a colonoscopy and in the end surgery was discarded, but I've been put on a ghastly low fiber diet for some time. It would be very good of you to look for more info on the matter in your alterntive health books.I'd appreciate the information you can find. My daughters are now up in arms against my KT drinking, and I just don't seem to be able to make them understand it's a probiotic food. KT is the only alternative thing I " do " besides an occasional cup of linden or chamomile tea. Point is: CAN I go on drinkink KT? I think I'll go back to a more fiber diet once this bout of diverticulitis has subsided. Guest guest
Terry, regardless of whatever else has been said, I'm certain you can continue to drink KT. I don't know why your children are against it, but it would not be in your best interest to stop drinking it. It is a probiotic, health-building food/drink. As far as fiber, only you know what your diet should look like, so please don't feel that someone can sit thousands of miles away and prescribe for you. In terms of fiber, there is soluble and insoluble (bran type), and it might be important for you to focus on soluble fiber (and maybe you already know this). But here's a link, entitled: " Soluble Fiber ~ The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Good Guy " http://www.helpforibs.com/diet/fiber1.asp wishing you well, --V ~~~ There is no way to peace; peace is the way ~~~~ --A.J. Guest guest
Hi Annie, I've also been told that I can have the " bad " part of my divericulii removed through surgery, and that nearly happened last Friday. However, if I can avoid surgery, I will. I live in Argentina, in spite of it being considered a third world country by other countries, it has an excellent, truly excellent medical service and my medical insurance pays for everything. It's just I want to avoid surgery, I've had two Caesarean sections, an operation to have an infected ovary removed, a laparoscopy for my gall bladder, and an operation on my left elbow after a nasty exposed fracture. I don't want to see another operation theatre! Guest guest
, I certainly shall go on drinking KT in spite of what my children say. They don't know anything about it, and the look of the Scoby puts them off. I guess they are all for allopathic medicine. You know, I had forgotten about soluble and insoluble fibers. Been taking bran, guess that was not good for me. Thank you very much for the link, I'm going to open it now. They don't know anything about it, and the look of the Scoby puts >them off. I guess they are all for allopathic medicine. In addition to their being prejudiced against natural/whole healing, remember that we've been told that in Germany, where there is an unbroken tradition of KT brewing, they don't let the children see the SCOBY until they are very well entrenched in drinking their KT and attached to it. I think it's fairly natural for people to be put off by the looks of the SCOBY/brewing (curiously, I wasn't, but I understand those who are), particularly for those whose idea of a meal is beer and cake (as an internet friend confessed recently). > You know, I had forgotten about soluble and insoluble fibers.
