I think that suicide is only one known worry. Any drug that is intended for one thing, and being suggested to use for something else needs to be looked at seriously. And the fact that this is not only something different, but in our kids, concerns me.

All children react to things differently. And without a physician monitoring the child there is no correct regulation of dosage. Which is a huge issue for me.

As far as your thoughts on our kids not being to be at a point where they are aware enough to understand taking their life, I don't know if I agree or not. I have known two who have tried to commit suicide. Both happened after losing a parent.

Never not under supervision.... I can tell ya a small story here. I am a pain in the butt to everyone around me about just that subject. Always have my kids supervised. Not an option. We go on vacation to Florida. I am in a 2.5 foot deep wading pool with my son Branndon who was then about 2 or so. Standing up the water is mid chest on him. I am about 3 feet from him. Watching him. I literally rubbed my eye to wipe off sweat, and then he was face down in the pool. That fast. I pulled him up, he was fine, altho ready to go in and spitting water. I was a basket case. Had it been the hubby out there, he would have NEVER been allowed to watch the kids again, I would never have believed the story had he told it to me. So we can only do our best, but we cannot be there every second. No one can.

I don't know if it works, I hope so. I understand those using it being excited about what they see in their child but I just worry very much about someone reading all this, going to a doc who will give a prescription and never follow up and a child getting put on prozac without proper follow up. And then something bad happening to the child. You would have a parent wanting the best for their child. A doc who should be strung up (my personal belief for no follow up on a drug like that), and a child in trouble. That is my concern with the whole thing and why I wish there was good trials out there being done BEFORE it was being used with our kids.

-- *Re: [DownSyndromeInfoExchange] PROZAC more questions

Hi thanks for all the input on prozac. The big worry seems to be the possible link to sucide. I do however recognise that the implications of the drug on the developing child are for the most part unknown. Is this correct ???? Can we also say the improvements on CM protocol are relative ??? That all children come from different starting points and therefore will not all reach the same levels of development ???

If the above is true ( and please correct me if I am wrong ) then I need to ask another question. The notion of taking ones life would require a certain level of awareness, definetly a certain high level of self awareness?? Ok here is where I am talking about Sam and Sam alone. Sam has vast potiential that much I am sure of but even on this protocol I cannot see that Sam would ever attaining that level of awareness.

Of the very high functioning children and adults I know I have not seen that level of awareness. Perhaps its because I am not looking for it. Mabye or maybe its just not there . I dont know.

I also know that by the very nature of Sams disability he is never not under supervision , medical , and physical ( as in someone watching over him) and generally any other kind. His school constantly picks up on things , emtional , physical , medical as do I and as do his doctors. Sam since birth has been under a high level of supervision . That is really never likely to change.

So looking at the above , do they meet the objections put forth to some degree??? We still have the unknown factors of the long term implications of taking the drug. Still children take this drug for a host of complaints besides depression as pointed out. So if there were significant risks would this drug be liscensed for use with children ???? Does this answer to any degree the questions around taking prozac if you are not depressed ??? Prozac seems to address a number of needs ,neurogensis being just one perhaps ????

I would like to think I am cutting to the nub of the issues but realise that I am probably just over simplifying everything. I am really just trying to get to the bottom this and decide if my way of thinking is completely off!!!!
