Berard AIT has more research backing its effectiveness and is a much quicker program (10 days versus 8 weeks with TLP and up to 6 months for Samonas) but isn't as enjoyable to listen to as the other two. Listening to the AIT music actually made me sick -- it's whacked out rock music that is played very loudly. According to our audiologist who has monitored both Samonas and TLP for us, she feels these programs are much better for really sensative kids because they " ease " the ears towards change rather than (in her words) " blast " the change like AIT does. Those who tout Samonas and TLP also claim they are much longer lasting. The benefits of all three programs tend to fade with time, usually more rapidly for kids with fragile health, so need to be redone usually. That's a real downside to AIT since it usually can't be done at home and is pretty expensive ($1,000-$2500) and an upside for Samonas ($600-800 for the CDs) and TLP ($300-500 for the CDs) since once you own the latter two, you can redo them at any time. One other benefit to Samonas is that it can be done with speakers if the child won't wear headphones while AIT and TLP must be done with headphones. Guest guest
Best headphones I have found are Sennheisser HD 500 series or above - they are light, comfortable, semi - enclosed in that they surround the ear closing off a lot of outside noise but still allow enough through for a therapist , teacher, parent or other to speak. They have a wide smooth frequency response well beyond perceived hearing limits - ie >20khz, very important for production of harmonics esp, in classical music and speech!, and also many of the listening programs use high frequencies in their modulated sections. Because of the above, they do not cause listening stress or fatigue like many headphones do. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either - about $US110 depending on the exact model you get. Besides, I can use them to listen to my favourite CD.s and tapes - they really sound fantastic!! Re: humming, etc. our audiologist told us never to do samonas thru speakers only thru high quality headphones. gaylen, did your audiologist tell you that you could do it thru speakers? i was just curious. i know sometimes, we get different stories from different therapists. i found the samonas very painless. They'd send us replacement wires and within a few months the problem would occur again. The wires were a bit more delicate and less encased than the Sony ones we have now. This was a few years ago so hopefully they've fixed the design flaw by now but anyone who uses these should listen to them regularly just to make sure your child is still getting all of what you want him to listen to. Guest guest
Sennheisser now supply thicker wires than the used to - they also have a mini jack that plugs the wire into the headset - if the wire is tugged, it simply pulls the plug out, and protects it from damage Re: humming, etc. In a message dated 8/29/02 2:49:51 AM Central Daylight Time, rmwilson@... writes: > Best headphones I have found are Sennheisser HD 500 series or above We used these when we started Samonas but we, and several other families I know, had ongoing problems with their wires shorting out off and on.
