Skin Cancer, DMSO, Artemisnin, Curcumin

Notes from Dr. ' November 2005 newsletter, Alternatives. Those familiar with know he's long been a proponent of using DMSO. I want to type some of the info fromt he newsletter FYI and to help with retention.

•Dr. Gordon Telford's (Canadian Dermatologist)skin cream can reportedly decrease actinic keratoses--precursors to squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas. Has also reduced wrinkles and lines in 400 patients without skin cancer.

2 oz skin cream,

14 grams (a rounded tablespoon) of Vitamin C powder

4000 IU Vitamin E (~10 400 IU Capsules)

60,000 IU Vitamin A (6 10K UY caosykes00use retinyl palmitate not beta-carotene)

1.5 grans zinc sulfate (seven 220 mg caps)

•Dr. Henry Lai of Univ of Wash has used artemisinin (an extract from the wormwood plant Artemisia annua) with iron to combat cancer. Artemisinin reacts strongly with iron, found in higher than normal amounts in cancerous cells. When Lai's package is absorbed int cancer cells, the iron is released and reacts witht he artemisinin to release free radicals--selectively destroying the cancer, leaving healthy cells intact. (Expert Opinion Ther Targets 05:9(5):995-1007) (Life Sci 05;76(11):1267-1279) (Cancer leters 95;98(1):83-87 (Anticancer Res 04;24(4):2277-2280) Studies don't mention melanoma . suggests using a paste made of one capsule of artemisinin and a drop or two of DMSO on skin cancers twice daily. •Lutein in eggs is way more bioavailable than from other sources including cooked spinich and supplements. (J Nutr 04;134(8):1887-1893) In the study cited, the eggs were cooked. It is believed that Lutein protects AMD and cataracts. http://www.nutrition.org/cgi/content/full/134/8/1887#B16

• discusses reported increase in melanoma as a result of increased reporting--there's been no increase in deaths or the number of advanced cases since 1986 even tho' there's been a 250% increase in skin biopsies...Dartmouth Medical School. (BMJ 05;331(7508):698) Suggests second opinion from MD.org.

•MD Cancer Center in H ouston has done some studies on turmeric and curry powder stopping lab strains of melanoma, causing cancer cells to commit suicide. Using oral curcumin supplements.Therapeutic oral dose for cancer is 3.6 gm/day or even 3.6 gm. three times/day totaling 10.8 grams. No toxicity.

--India has 90% fewer cases of colon, breast, prostate and lung cancer than the US.

--Life Extension Foundation lef.org offers curcumin/piperine caps. Peperine increases bioavailability of curcumin.

--Short term high concentrations and long term lower concentrations of curcumin suppress cancers.

--topical application of curcumin can suppress squamous cell head and neck carcinoma. (Clin Cancer Res 05;11;6994-7002) Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA

-- suggests applying a paste of DMSO+ ½ cap artemisinin + ½ cap curcumin to skin cancers.

•2 Vitamin D-related compounds (sunshine-related) are lumisterol and tachysterol may be assoiated with helping prevent blood sugar problems and obesity.
