Guest guest
IMHO I think that we are all in agreement that days of long slow running to build an aerobic base is over. There have been various opinions as to how to develop the best conditioed soccer athlete. I think sometimes when we here the term aerobic we think of long slow running. I do beleive that overall soccer is a high interval aerobic sport with anaerobic bouts interspersed and that you must train accordingly. I work with a youth soccer development company with male and female athletes ages 8-18. Sessions are 1.5 hours. The first twenty minutes is focused on dynamic warm up, speed, agility and quickness drills with or with out the ball. The training sessions foucus on technique for the younger athletes and tactical play for the older players. The coaches train at game pace and when they scrimmage for the last twenty minutes we see a carry over of energy. For some of the older players that want to get stronger I develop basic strength programs. I am always looking for ways to improve both the strength and conditioning of our players as we are embarking on having eight teams for the spring and summer this year. I would like to thank those of you who have contributerd to this topic as I will be incorporating some of the ideas on a full scale as we move into our spring /summer season. My toonies worth...
