Hi everyone,

We have had a long and poopy history with our son who is now 5 years

old. With the benefit of hind-sight I see how all of his symptoms

from birth were letting us know what the problem was, however, his

anolrectal malformation went undiagnosed until he was 3 years old.

Once correctly diagnosed he had a successful analplasty. Follow-up

treatment of dilatation was barbaric.

He is now 5 years old, 20 months from the surgery, and I want to take

advantage of the summer holidays to wean him from miralax. He stayed

on miralax after the surgery because he needed to have pain-free

pooping. He was starting to withhold his poops due to a

pain-association. (Imagine trying to pass a BM through a tiny, tiny,

opening.) Also, keeping him on miralax has allowed him to have a

regular bm pattern, attend school without soiling incidents and

frankly give us all a much needed break from the painful cycle that we

had named poop-a-palooza. Since his surgery he has become a much much

healthier child.

I am concerned about his long-term use of the drug, he has had

problems with constant itching, and I'm worried about kidney problems.

I'm taking him in to his doctor to get a kind of baseline health

check (test for kidney issues) and then I want to start weaning him

from the drug. I am fearful that the actual opeing that his anus

allows is just not going to let him poop normally. His surgeon felt

that he would be fine but I'm not sure.

I am hoping that this group with have some helpful advice on weaning

from miralax and controlling constipation. I'm also wondering if

anyone has had similar experience with analplasty.

Thanks,

Nathalie

Nathalie - Can't help you on the analplasty, but I'm totally with you on the Poop-a-palooza. We have the same thing here! :)
