This is my first post-must pass muster before being posted. I hope you will share this information with others, however. A CALORIE IS NOT A CALORIE IS NOT A CALORIE...as some of you have posted or want to believe

Very informative post and I agree

We seem to have similar stats. I'm 5'3", weigh 147, wear size 8 and am age 63.

Ann beverly and Y'all

I agree that eating to soon before bedtime is not healthy.

I have my last food no later than 5:00 PM

I am 72 (male) 5"10 1/2" weigh 160 Size 32 32 pants (Trousers) Shirt size medium.

I am 5' 3 1/2" and weigh 200 pounds. I wear size 16. Interesting, when I was 125 pounds I wore 12/14. And I was bucking hay, breaking horses, and of course walking all the time. So clothes size is not a total answer either. lolol But it does help. My daughter weighs the same as I and wears 18's. And is an inch and a half taller.

I stuck to my 1200 calories for the full week folks and am down 6 pounds. My clothes are looser. That is about double my normal calorie level. This week is 1600 calories a day. A breakfast is as much food as I normally eat in a whole day! But I am really trying.

Steve you are so incredible......I wish I lived over there so my hubbie and I could come out and meet you. Too bad you can't get paid for spending the time to go around the country and meet us all! lolol

If I quit eating after 5:00PM I would go without dinner each day :) Dinner time is usually around 6:30-7:00 PM for me. I often have an evening snack before bedtime especially if I've done weight training or one of my Pilates classes. I need to get a little protein into my system.

The most important thing is to keep the total calories within my 1300-1700 range depending on the amount of exercise I've done for the day. I try never to go over this limit unless I'm doing one of those long bike rides that requires a little extra fuel. Eight hours of biking burns a lot of calories.

I live alone and have no set time for dinner or menu. If not hungry, I

don't eat. I go dancing a lot for exercise and ride a bike.

I was skinny as a kid, but finnally added some weight after my first

summer job after high school. Growing up, I could not wait until the

after dinner hours to play tennis.

I recall losing weight fast when driving from Texas to California as a

29 year old, having only some tuna fish sandwitches to eat. Fast food

places were not so easily found in those days. I've been an avid

tennis player until about age 49 when I moved and found no regular

partners, which is why I took up dancing.

It seem unfortunate that he has to be away from family to loose the

weight, but I applaud him for doing it. Many obese have issues that

prevent exercise.

right now I am doing the Curves eating plan...the lower carb version. They have a book for $10 and it gives you a variety of ways to do the eating program. I have always been an active person, backpacking and walking everywhere I can. Given a choice I prefer to walk. But being a busy person I do not eat. And I have no hunger signals to tell me to eat so that is no help. Maybe I have just lost them from years of not eating! lol

The first two days of the 1600 calories I did not make it but I got 1550 one day and almost 1500 the second day. It looks like it will be 1500 today as well. The whole idea behind this eating plan is what the dr tells me all the time. I have to eat.

So it looks like it is working and I will keep on trying.

TY Cherise. You keep it up. I am obviously losing by eating also. They tell me if you eat less then 1200 calories a day you will not be able to lose weight. It is true in my case, and sounds like yours too.

Can you give me an idea of what you are doing on your eating plan please? It sounds like you and I are similar in that I used to weigh between 140 and 150lbs, and I wore a size 13/14. Maybe if this is working for you it would work for me. Thanks Connie jjsmth@... wrote: I am 5' 3 1/2" and weigh 200 pounds. I wear size 16. Interesting, when I was 125 pounds I wore 12/14. Vivian - I can't help you but I wanted to share this story with you. Last August my husband and I rode our motorcycles to Sturgis, S. D., (from Tx.) and on our way...somewhere in northern Colorado we saw a young man who was biking. We stopped to talk to him and he had started in Seattle, he rode all the way to N. Y., and he was on his way back to Seattle when we saw him. You might Google it and see what comes up... Good luck to your son - Bethvivian akins wrote: My son wants to bike across our community (about 15 miles). Neither of us have the experience to do this. Vivian-

My son and I went on an amazing bike adventure last spring. It is a bike ride across California...with 5th graders from San Diego! The kids start in September (on the weekends) to train for this adventure. Then during spring break, everybody drives to the Colorado River and begins a bike journey across California and eventually end up at the Pacific Ocean, 7 days, and 280+ miles later.

It was an amazing journey because the kids and parents who went experienced extreme heat, fierce winds through mountains and desert and after each long day of riding, we had to pitch camp and clean up! Most everybody that began also finished, with the exception of the few who got injured. But it was amazing to see the kids when they crossed the finish line with hundreds of friends and family cheering them!

If you would like to learn more about the training and preparation, go to the school website (link is below). A 5th grade teacher has been coordinating this for years and it is quite an inspiration to see! There is some very useful info on the site that you can use with your son...who knows, he may start with a goal of 15 miles and eventually do 40 - 50 in a day. It is very possible, as I saw for myself!

Vivian,

Here's a website that has a lot of information on beginning biking. Maybe it will answer some questions for you. http://bicycling.about.com/od/beginningcycling/

If you're going to ride on the roads be sure to read some information on biking safety. I lead rides for the local parks but they're held on trails. If you and your son are new to biking it might be best to start with shorter rides and build up to the 15 mile ride. It won't take long.

Be sure your bikes are comfortable. You'll want to carry some water, tire pump and extra tube or patch kit. If you don't know how to change a tire at least you'll have the necessary tools and hopefully someone will stop to help<g> I always carry my cell phone and don't hesitate to call home and tell them to come pick me up :)

Most of all - have fun. I've taken my grandchildren on many bike trips. If fact, my 14 year old granddaughter and I are heading to Florida in a couple weeks for some biking and laying on the beach.

It sounds as though a few of us on here have the same problem, for years I regularly ate no where near 1000 KCals and my weight was just fine at around 9 to 9 stone 7 pounds (126 to 133 pounds), I'm 5' 7" tall and was very fit at the time. After the RTA I piled on all the weight and now my Doctor and nutritionist as saying I need to eat about 1500 KCals per day to lose weight and I have a real problem doing this (if I don't I put weight ON though!). I can't walk that well, but I do try to walk some distance everyday and I am getting my bike out of storage now the better weather is coming along. Any hints anyone as to anything else I can do?The Dragon (aka High Priestess Enchanting Evenweave), stitching on RRs = Margaret Sherry and bell-pull also WIPs/UFOs = 3 x Wentzler, Celtic Summer

I think you just need to eat and then find the kind of physical activity (s) that work for you. I see people do swimming, bike riding, hiking/walking, backpacking, strength training, etc. something different works for each person. Or a combination of things. I ride my bike ( although it is broke down right now. I walk on my treadmill in the winter, and backpack in the summer when ever I get the chance. I put my treadmill in front of a great painting of a cabin in the valley surrounded by trails and mountains. I can imagine I am heading either out from or back to the cabin. lol It works for me. I take grandchildren on walks and hikes, and I have one so far who likes to back pack. A couple more are going to start this year and see if they like it. and right now I am really putting out the effort to eat more. 3 to 6 hundred calories a day does not cut it. Every time I was pregnant I ate like a pig and lost weight. I have done it other times too. I just need to keep it up. All the people on here who have discussed their different problems and the way they are dealing with them make me ashamed I don't try harder. So I am. Keep it up, everyone!

Yes, but not as much as I'd like :). I had been mountain biking off and on for many years. I'll get out every other week or so. My son was ready for a break away from the riding due to his many other activities. We had big plans for a group of us to get together and bike one the weekends, but that fizzled soon after. Of course the sense of accomplishment never fizzled, which is the great thing for the kids!

Noone ever need feel ashamed- :) I read in alot of

your letters that most everyone puts everyone else

ahead of themselves! ( i am REALLY bad at that) and

when your going 24/7 at 100mph, you sometimes just

dont get hungry!! what helps for me is keeping healthy

munchies with me wherever i am- a handful of nuts, a

piece of fruit, a protein bar, and yes sometimes

occasional chocolate- :) so that youre kind of

" grazing " all day- but we were brought up in the

" clean plate club " , taught to eat 3 solid meals per

day and no snacking- ! ahhhhh! i wish they would make

up their minds!! but seriously, it keeps your energy

level up, youre going so youre burning, i am no where

near perfect, but this does help you meet your

calories- just make sure its not high in fat or

calories:)

I just think everyone here is wonderful for sharing

their stories, for giving up a few moments to

encourage each other, I can't tell you how happy i am

that i joined this group-

thank you all for being wonderful- :)

kisses, cherise

That is true to an extent but if you spend your whole life time eating less then 1200 cal a day your body goes into starvation mode and stays there. I am evidence of that. I regularly eat 4 to 6 hundred cal a day and am "over weight". I have been eating 1200 cal for a week and dropped 6 pounds. I am now eating 1500 to 1600 a day. I have had various drs tell me over the years my problem is lack of eating and I have done the eating before and ALWWAYS lose weight when I do. I don't stick with it because it is too much bother and takes too much time. Which is my excuse for just not wanting to! lol This time I have decided I will stick to it. And I am really putting out the effort. Energy is not a problem for me, I regularly take 6 grandchildren for hikes and on trips. (They are ages 2 to 7). I am on the go 16 to 17 hours out of 24. I am working tonight till about midnight...I will be wide awake again by 6:30. A typical day at this time of year means ready to work at 7, Tues I go to school with 2 of my grandchildren til noon, pick up senior bags for various people and deliver them, back home to work till 3 or 4, do errands or spend a couple hours with hubbie, exercise (usually walking) for one to two hours, and then work again till midnight. And I am supposed to find time to eat?!?!? lol. Every day is similar. My idea of a break is to grab my pack and take off hiking through the woods for a week. Oh well...

Shirley, I am glad you are coming along with your knee recovery. You will be out there walking in no time! You are fabulous!

Probably everone has to find his own best solution concerning daily

calorie intake. Last year I did the " Body for Life " program and

followed the (for my body weight) recommended intake of 1800 cals. The

result was that I was hungry all the time, felt weak, didn't sleep

well and did NOT lose weight. Only after I went up to 2100 cals and

added a lot of low cal. veggies my energy came back, I felt fantastic

and the weight loss went on.

Unfortunatly I did not stick to my then very healthy eating habits. :-(

Ferdinand

PS: I wonder it it's healthy if you go way below the maintenace level

like Jane did with 1200 cals., not only because of problems with

weightloss but more because of burning muscles and maybe ngeative

impact on general body functions.

If you burn muscles through a strict diet, the calorie need will

decrease as well. As soon as you return to your usual eating habits

you will add even more fat, because your body will be even more

overfed compared to time before the diet - the well known Yoyo effect

will kick in with full force...
