Guest guest
My daughter will be 3 in April. She weighs 29 lbs and has been on Miralax for 1 year 8 months. We are currently down to 1/2 tsp a day. She gets the following once a day in a cup with flavored water: 3/4 tsp Natural Calm for Kids, 1/4 tsp Fibersure, and 3 tsp 's Aloe. She also gets 1 Rhino acidophillus with FOS, 1/2 of a Fiber choice chewable, and 1 Usana multivitamin. As I lower the miralax her poop consistancy changes. It is still soft but playdoh like. She ususally goes once per day but does occasionally skip a day. Yesterday she went a second time after saying she had a tummy ache. A pile of small soft balls came out. She drinks 16oz of milk, 12-16 oz of juice, and about 8 oz of water a day. We tried soy milk for a few months but didn't really see a difference and are back on cow's milk. She eats probably one serving of fruit and one serving of veggies a day. She is a very picky eater and doesn't care much for fresh fruit. The best we do is babyfood fruit, applesauce, and canned no sugar peaches. She will also eat a few raisins here and there. Her belly is bloated always after dinner and occasionally other times during the day. We are trying to convince her to pee in the potty too but she isn't really wanting to yet. She holds her pee in public so I am sure she is/will be a poop holder too. So I am scared to wean her off Miralax complety until she is potty trained. This could be awhile though. Any suggestions on the next step I should take? Aimee Hays
Guest guest
Hi Aimee, I am no expert here so please take what I say with a grain of salt. But here is what I am thinking: ~~Skip the milk all together. Get calcium from brocolli and other veggies (leafy greens I think). Besides the fact that the calcium in veggies is utalized better than calcium in dairy, veggies also don't clog your arteries like the fat in homo milk will. ~~Although I find it hard to believe myself, I keep hearing that applesauce is constipating. ~~If your dd is only eating 1 serving of fruit and 1 serving of veggies what else is she eating? Rice, potatoes, pasta, meat, all dairy are all constipating ('cept maybe not yogurt or sweet taters). I hate this evil with every fiber of my being!!! It has put such limits on what I can feed my dd. Every single meal I fix (gotta please 6 people here) I have to stop and think- will there be ANYTHING that Hannah can eat???? Last night I fed her a can of black olives and an orange. Yesterday she had yogurt with pairs for lunch, and for breakfast she had cream of wheat with peaches. Hor snack she had homemade trail bar with oats, raisins, walnuts, etc. Today she will get sweet potatoes and green beans. Here is a thought. Now I know that sugar is not good when trying to combat the yeastie beastie, but have you tried the fruit in light syrup? They have neat little serving size containers (easy to haul) now. She might prefer that to fresh fruit. Fresh is better, but when you need to get her to eat.... I am getting desperate here myself!! My dd is on day six of no real movement (3 tablespoon size movements yesterday is not enough) and she only eats stuff like I mentioned above. She is taking Oxy Powder plus I gave her x-lax and a sopository. (Banging head here). Susie~ wvuaimee wrote: My daughter will be 3 in April. Guest guest
Just guessing -- but I bet the consistency is pasty and greyish or yellowish in color? I agree with removing milk and dairy entirely. Use rice milk for substitute. DariFree is ok too. Increase the magnesium citrate -- dissolve it in hot water and sneak it into anything you can-- it makes calcium from vegetables more absorbable. Most kids with constipation have too much calcium. Consider digestive enzymes - kirkman, klaire or houston is what most people use for kids. Consider probiotics. Vegetable juice with fruit juice a possiblity? Epsom salt baths help too. Buy it in bulk at Costco. Hope this helps. > > My daughter will be 3 in April. She weighs 29 lbs and has been on > Miralax for 1 year 8 months. Guest guest
Actually her poops aren't pasty, yellow, or gray. They are non-sticky playdoh like. Formed but I can mush them easily. The are usually always poop brown and occasionally a little green. I haven't seen green in a while though. I really am not ready to give up the milk yet. I will consider trying soy again. After 2 soft ball poops, she went two more times today with bigger softer poops. It seems like after I decrease her miralax she takes a few days to adjust and then goes back to her regular poops. I only decrease by 1/8 tsp about every 3-4 weeks. It gives me hope that I can eventually get her off this and she will readjust and go back to regular poops. Thanks for the help Don't get soaked. Guest guest
Hi--that bloating can happen with the miralax. Had she ever tried lactulose? I wonder if she were to switch to lactulose, would the bloating go away perhaps, and it would still allow you to keep her on a prescription 'laxative' but eliminate that side effect, until you get her potty trained. Guest guest
Lactulose was the first med she was on before the miralax. She was on it for a few months. It made her gassy and bloated and it didn't seem to do much. It was a very confusing time though. We were seeing this crazy GI doc and he made no sense. I had no idea how much or how often to give it. He also gave us some other medicine because he said the lactulose would likely cause tummy pain. We weren't going to give her something that made her hurt so we quit going to him and our reg ped prescribed miralax. Her poop was soft today but she acted like she was having a hard time getting it out. I am not sure why. I was going to order fruit eze again but I am not sure it worked for her the first time around. I think the whole fiber thing makes her more plugged up. I was also going to try and get a daily dose of flax oil in her too. Is there any difference (poop wise) between regular milk and organic milk? Sucker-punch spam with award-winning protection. Guest guest
HI Aimee-- with lactulose the person needs to take it daily, and they need to take a certain amount of water per day to allow it to work, and they need to give it a good week or two to determine if it is helping or not. She could very well have had the gassy/bloated feeling with it, too! It happens to some people. If the stool is so soft that it isn't in a decent "log" shape, then the body might find it hard to push out. It's so much more complicated than what we all ever thought isn't it... it also seems to depend on the muscles and nerves...sometimes soft stool comes out easily, and other times it is still difficult to push it out... wish we all knew why! RE: fruit eze... if you don't think it helped too much the first time around then perhaps try something else instead. How old is she again? I don't know if organic vs. nonorganic milk would make a difference... I prefer to buy organic whenever possible. You could always try the switch and see if you notice any difference for her. Guest guest
She will be 3 in April. It was over a year ago we tried Fruiteze and I think we were giving her too much which was making her more plugged up instead of giving her the runs. It goes back to the fiber without water thing. I don't give her huge amounts of fiber because I can't get her fluid consumption any higher than it is. The other thing that is hard, is where we live. We are on a Marine base in Okinawa, Japan. I can't just run out to the health food store and get stuff. We have a GNC that is about the size of my kitchen. We also don't get alot of good produce to pick from. I would love to give her the Dannon active yogurt or the kind with fiber but we can't get that either. I am sure the Japanese have all kinds of good health food stuff in town. I just can't read kanji symbols. I was going to get the flavored stevia to add to water. Have you tried it? > Lactulose was the first med she was on before the miralax. Guest guest
Hi--I have not tried stevia. I will have to do some thinking on the asian vegetables that can help with constipation... I am sure there are some, and perhaps she will try some. Like perhaps bean sprouts--would she eat those? I do not know if they "help" but would be worth a try, as they have the water in them-- kids tend to prefer to try eating them raw (washed of course) and cold from the fridge. If you can locate a mom that is a Japanese-American, they might be able to help you find something off the base. Ask the commissary on base to begin to carry the Dannon Activia yogurt-- since it's getting a lot of commercial air time here in the US, they might consider it at least.
