Donnie, I really do sympathize with you. Apartment living is the bane of any 4S'ers existence. Years back I swore the walls of the place I lived in were made of spit and Kleenex. Oh, lord - worse was the place I lived in that was above a laundromat. People would bring their kids in there and you could hear the kids screeching and banging on the washing machines. I drove school bus at the time and had to get up at 5 AM. It was just awful sometimes...

We live in a single family home, but approx. 500 ft. away from a major intersection. Every time some car come up the hill here with the bass booming in their car - or a motorcycle revving the motor/muffler, I want to run out and pull the owner of the car out and beat the living Hades out of him/her - or throw nails on the road so that every ignoramus's tires get flattened. It's worse when the light is red and they SIT there for those 2 - 3 minutes with the constant BOOM-BOOM-BOOM.

We are in the process of finding ONE LAST home. One in the country. I pray every day for the perfect home to come along. I tell everyone I don't want to "see, hear or smell" my neighbors.

You truly are not alone.

elaine, thank you for responding, it seems we are living "the same life" but in different places. i have, for the past 10 or so years only worn my earplugs at night, when i sleep and then, at least 1 pillow over my head to really drown out any sound. i feel now, that as soon as "that sounds" comes on, i am "forced" to stop what i'm doing, reading, watching t.v., writing or trying to concentrate on "anything" and it's too early but i just can't handle that sound so i'm putting in the earplugs early (like now) and coming here with my fan on to drown out that sound upstairs. i don't know what i'm going to do. no one knows about my s.s. except my best friend and she tries to understand but it's not easy. other people have suggested turning on music but i like peace and quiet when i'm at home and also, the walls are so thin here, you could not turn it up even loud enough to drown out other sounds because you can hear right through these walls. i don't think they are insulated at all. it's more like the next door neighbors are in the next bedroom and i can hear their conversations. i do like to listen to music but in my car. here, i just want peace and quiet, i keep my t.v. down and never turn up music or make noise to bother neighbors. when the "new" upstairs neibhbors moved in, a sunday morning and i was awakened by what sounded like a "movie theatre".....BOOMING SOUND and i said "of all places god, why above me"???????? i cried and then, stood on my bed with one of my weights and POUNDED 3 TIMES HARD, THE DENTS ARE STILL IN MY CEILING. it went down and i talked to my managers on mon. and it hasn't happend (much) since. i feel like i am in "hell"...............i know, i'm not alone. if not for this board, i might think i was alone. donnie

Oh...let me ASSURE YOU that you are not the only person who

gets that ‘crazy’. But...since Marsha has told me...and I have to

believe her...that I am NOT CRAZY...I will say that you are not the only person

who gets that Perfectly Obsessively NORMAL.

Before I start on my ex-noisy neighbors, let me address something

you also mentioned...only briefly. You said that you are embarrassed to use

your masking techniques around your friends. SO AM I!!! It’s horrible!! I

still live in our ‘college town’ and I am single with no children.

Consequently...ALL of my friends want to come visit ALL THE TIME!!!! I don't mind,

because I love them to death, and I love hanging out with them and pretending

we are 19 again. The problem is that it is really difficult to do the things

that ‘we always do’ in our apartments when other people are around.

For example, I don't care how hot or cold it is outside, I always have my

ceiling fan on. (UGH! I just realized I don't think I have admitted this to

anyone else before...lol) I have taped the little chain thingies that hang from

my ceiling fan to the glass globe on light fixture part...so they don't clank

against it. But, because of that, I never turn the light on because I am afraid

the tape will melt or something. People very rarely notice the tape, or the

fact that I never turn the light on...but one of my friends DID! It was a very

long, very awkward conversation...so now, I take it off when I know people are

coming over...BUT THEN IT DRIVES ME BATTY ALL WEEKEND!!!!

One of the other big ones is that if there is an ‘unfamiliar

sound’ somewhere in the apartment, I have to know what it is. If

something is charging, or if they have their laptop on, or if someone is

tapping something, or rattling change in their pocket...If I hear it, I have to

know what it is, and I can’t concentrate until I know what it is. After I

have interrogated everyone to find out ‘who is doing that’ or ‘what’s

that noise’...I feel silly.

Just thought I would share.

Moving on...The people in the apartment above mine moved out

4 months ago. It’s been lovely. I used to hear them walking ALL THE

TIME!!! I was sure that the guy was the jolly green giant, or a not so distant

relative. It was ridiculous. I’d even had other people come over and

mention it. How does anyone walk, stomp, or MARCH around the house ‘that

hard’? He must have been practicing to lead his troops into battle or

something.

At night, there were...’other noises’. I mean

really! You know you live in an apartment, at least TRY to keep it down. I used

to get SO CRAZY when that happened. It was always so LATE. I was tired and knew

I would be tired the next day, so that just intensified EVERYTHING!! I would

turn on the vent in the bathroom so that they would know that ‘someone

might hear them’. I ran the shower, or turned my T.V. up really loud.

Nothing helped. I thought of all the ways I could tell them that they were

INSANELY LOUD! I wanted to leave them an ‘anonymous note’ that said

something like “I don't think you should be shooting ‘flicks’

in our quiet gated condo community, without sending your neighbors checks for

our ‘inconvenience’. Please refrain from doing so.”

Of course, I never did...because...well how awkward would

that be? So, I ignored it for months. But then...it started getting progressively

worse. It was off the charts! It was almost comical. I wanted to leave a note

on her windshield asking her if he had a brother...lol. It would have been

really funny in the middle of the afternoon...but at 2am, not so much. There

was one night when I am not sure I was as angry as I was jealous. FOUR HOURS!!!

Four hours this goes on!!! FOUR HOURS! Did everyone read that it was four

CONSECUTIVE HOURS! I wanted to knock on the door and ask if I could watch...I

might as well! I felt like I was in the room anyway!

When I got home the next day, I waited for the SLIGHTEST

noise so that I could go knock on their door and tell them that they were being

really loud. If they thought that a little noise was loud, then maybe they

would realize how loud the LOUD noises must be in my apartment. They were very

nice and apologetic, but IT NEVER GOT ANY BETTER.

Anyway, someone else moved in last week. So far so good, but

I’m really hoping that it was the last set of neighbors that just

happened to be super duper loud, and not the fact that the apartments are

poorly constructed. I’ve only been here a year and I just signed a new

lease, so wish me luck!

In closing...I truly sympathize. If only the other people

could know what we were going through! I wish just for 20 mins the roles could

be reversed. Just once, they could have a ‘Freaky Friday’

experience...that did not involve them literally being FREAKS on a Friday!

Shon K!

I totally agree with you that people that don't

experience 4S should spend 20-30 min in our shoes! My

big triggers are sniffing, snoring, chewing with

mouths open and loud bass sounds.

I have been blessed with a boyfriend that is somewhat

understanding of the situation. Last evening I was at

his apt when I heard a loud bass thumping either from

the apt above or below him. He was sweet enough to

pound on the wall for me, which eventually turned into

him going upstairs to knock on the door. (I think

having me explain the noises and that I have better

hearing than most people has made him more aware of

the sounds around him, which in turn has caused him to

become annoyed by the sounds..not as bad as 4S, but

just aware) To my surprise it was the ppl below us. It

wasn't directly below us, but one apt over...that's

how loud the music was. I was the next one to venture

out of the apt and go downstairs and scope out which

apt number it was. I was surprised that you could

clearly hear the music and conversation in the hallway

about 20 feet before reaching the apt door. I NEVER

knocked as I was scared that the ppl would turn to

rage and try to pull something. As I ventured back to

my boyfriends apt, I was contemplating what options I

could reveal to stop the insane thumping. I just kept

thinking, how rude to think that your the only people

in this complex that are home and feel you have to

play your music insanely loud.

My boyfriend wound up calling the cops at 10:15pm and

a funny thing happend...the minute he got off the

phone everything was blissfully silent for the rest of

the night.

The point of this long story is that it's important

to find someone that is supportive of you (which all

of all ready knew). I just don't understand WHY people

have to play music that could blow out speakers....I

have never understood this and probably never will.

I too have a dream of a soundproof room!

Thanks for letting me vent,

Is this some useless trait passed down through evolution to have such

I have thought about this line from those
