Guest guest
We, with 4S/hyperacusis, don't have the ability to " tune out " or " block out. " I guess we are missing something in our brain to be able to " get used to " a certain sound. I know there have been new sounds that have initially bothered friends, such as when moving to a new home, but they are able to " get used to " the sounds and are no longer bothered by them after a short period of time. There have been times when a noise has really bothered me, and I've asked those around me if it bothers them. They usually have to stop to listen to it first because they normally don't notice it, and then they usually say, " I can hear it now, but it doesn't bother me. " I just wish I could get " used to " the sounds, but my mind always pays attention to them. I never get a break! > > Yeah--I get irritated when someone is using bad manners, and sometimes even > appalled. But I can just easily block it out. Guest guest
Does anyone have any ideas as to why gum chewing in particular is soooooo distressing, painful, and agonizing? I am in awe by the number of people who have a common extreme disturbance by this sound (me being one of them!). I truly am repulsed and repelled by it. But why that particular sound? There seems to be some more common sounds like this one. Any ideas? You are actually helping me understand the " other side " of this problem by sharing what you just said. Before, I simply could not fathom that it actually does not bother other people. This still sucks! But now I see your point. You are able to just fluff it off as if it was nothing. I can only imagine.... Last night on the subway.....my GOD! They were all out there..... But thanks to you guys I had somewhat calmed down and feel 90% better today!! Thanks!! I think she looks repulsive, but I don't think it evokes the same feelings of repulsiveness that you feel as a 4s sufferer. My point to Pia was that even if his family saw the video, they still would not understand his feelings when he hears or sees a gum chewer. Believe me, I have been in church or out in public many of times and cannot believe the way people gnaw on their gum! I just feel for all of you who have this! -----Original Message-----From: Soundsensitivity [mailto:Soundsensitivity ]On Behalf Of Yvette Piraino Sent: Wednesday, April 16, 2008 1:57 PMTo: Soundsensitivity Subject: Re: Re: show your family this gum chewing video and turn up the volume I agree! Don't take this the wrong way, maybe you meant to say that it didn't bother you in the same way it bothers us, but surely you were offended by the lack of manners? I don't know how any cultured, educated person with any modicum of manners could not find that video completely repulsive. Guest guest
I was four when I first started noticing & reacting to the sounds that triggered me. She can still remember that. We need research!! This is definitely a physical haywire!
Guest guest
I wet the bed when I was 8 years old. My parents tried one of those bell systems that rang a loud bell very close to my ear every time I wet. It was after that I began having my sound sensitivity. I often wonder how many other people have experienced this as well? I recommend not doing the bell system on your child. My parents regret doing it to this day.
