Guest guest
Do you also use a low oxalate diet, or do you find you can manage the oxalate situation with supplements alone? We have been considering going LOD, but have hesitated because my youngest DD and I are vegetarians... Thanks so much for all this information. As always, you're a wonderful resource to this list!BonnieOn 5/24/07, mommtlc < oldworldtile@...> wrote: For a long time the common thought was that if the anus was red you were probably dealing with yeast. This may still be true, but another strong possibility is that you are dealing with oxalates, oxalic acid is a strong chemical that really burns. If your child is showing signs of this, please look into the possiblity that you are dealing with oxalates. Owens of the LOD *low oxalate diet " board has stated that PEG3350 (miralax) produces a high oxalate situtation in the gut -- it depends on the bacteria -- they don't know what type does it. We do know that high level of lactic acid help to break the calcium oxalate crystals apart and neutralizes the oxalic acid. Many have found that VSL#3 helps. Getting this out of the body is a long and slow process --if you go too fast you will release too much too soon and get a weepy child, very painful urination and defecation, etc I have had very good luck using magnesium and supplementing with all of the fat soluble vitamins -- a, d, e, and K. The A and D from high vitamin cod liver oil (green pastures), the E needs to be natural and high gamma, and k from Thorne -- specifically K2. Start with only a drop or two! And the VSL#3 is vital. I can't get my insurance to cover it, but if you have a diagnosis of colitis or similar you may be in luck. More information is available at the Vitamin K group http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/VitaminK/ It's been 11 months since my son has had any miralax. He is still " dumping " oxalates -- but much less frequently now. HTH
Guest guest
My kids love Rice Dream (ice cream) too. I'm so glad your daughter is doing so well. Adam was on 30g for awhile - I got it tapered down to 17g after 2 months, then down to 17g every other day before I went to nothing in one week using magnesium. Due to that dosage for just over a year, I think he may be dumping oxalates occasionally for the next year or two. Additionally, I'm worried that he may have long term kidney damage from the miralax. So, at 4 I can still (somewhat) monitor excretion -- but when he's older? Imagine having to remind a 14 year old to go poop! Guest guest
supposively they are prone to kindey stones when exposed to chemicals that cause oxalate crystals along with renal failure.
