Ugh, we have a neighbor with a constantly barking dog

too....it drives us both nuts. I am very involved in

animal rescue and I hate to hear dogs barking

incessantly - there is just no excuse for leaving a

dog outside to bark like that. Not only is it rude to

your neighbors, but it's terrible for the dog too!!

It means the dog is bored and distressed.

I'm not above writing a letter to neighbors, but this

particular dog seems to only bark late at night when I

am too lazy to get up and figure out which house he

lives at. :)

My cat bathing doesn't bother me...but get this, my cat snores. I'm

not kidding. I absolutely adore my cat, but snoring puts me over the

top and I kick him out. My wife snores and I've long since left her

in her own bed room. Even then with both bedroom doors closed I can

sometimes hear her and I turn on my sound machine and put in ear

plugs. Snoring sounds drive me beyond nuts.

I hate the sound of snoring as well. My dad snores

and I can hear it upstairs. If he falls asleep and I

am watching tv in the living room, I will repeatedly

wake him up or just leave the room.....I hate the

sound of snoring....I also cannot stand the sound of

swallowing and sometimes the sound of my own

swallowing drives me crazy

  • 3 months later...

I came to this group to get some support for this situation. This year I started to realize the extent of the barking around me. It was getting worse, too, with the dogs barking back and forth.Within one block of my house there are more than 30 dogs. That's a lot. There are at least 10 dogs one house away on each side. Ouch. Go a little farther, a few blocks, now we're up to 50 dogs.I became hypersensitive to this noise. The close range barking gets me agitated, anxious, outraged. I just can't believe my neighbors are so inattentive. Recently I realized that at night there are dogs barking that are farther away. It's so quiet that they are easy to find. The 'woof' is very faint, but it gets my heart started in the same way. Last month I went out at 3 am to find a barking dog, partly to see how far away it was. It was .7 miles, several blocks. There was a dog, and it was going crazy. After shining my flashlight on the house, windows, and dog, someone inside became aware and was able to quiet the dog.I like dogs, I just don't like the barking. I don't like the way people leave them outside to wake people up. It's sad.The only way for me to overcome the feeling when I start to hear the barking is to go out and find the dog/house. I want to know where it's coming from. Are there 5 dogs or 50 that are irritating me? If I don't know, that's what drives me crazy.Recently I have had limited success in quieting some of my neighbors' dogs. Calling the cops, personal confrontation, anonymous letters, they all get the owner's attention. If they then make an effort to quiet 'fido', I'm happy. That's all I want.During one of my creative and anguished phases I created this website, the Barking Dog ATLAS

barking dogs are one of my big triggers, too. i have found that calling the animal control officer and having him pay someone a visit works quite well. almost everyone around me has a dog, and many of them leave them outside to bark. i don't think there is anything more inconsiderate to your neighbors than to have that disruptive barking infiltrating your home. my next door neighbor, who thankfully is also our good friend, has a dog that barks. she knows i hate it, and tries to let him in when he starts up. i also will go over and let him in if she doesn't! (she doesn't care). like you, i want to go and find out where exactly the barking is coming from, though i never have. for some reason, even just knowing exactly where they are helps to ease my anxiety. i have convinced my husband that the next time we move, it will be to somewhere that we have a few acres and everyone's

houses aren't on top of each other. hopefully this will help with MANY different triggers. good luck to you. i added my idiot neighbors across the street to your atlas!nobar_king wrote: I came to this group to get some support for this situation. Thanks for participating in The Barking Dog ATLAS. Be careful of the 'country'. A lot of people move 'there' so they CAN own dogs and let them bark. Dogs can be heard more than a mile away. Probably much more if the conditions are right. You can't call the police to come handle the situation.

This is a good point...we live in a semi-rural area

and generally people are much less attentive with

their dogs than city people are. It is very common

here to have dogs that permanently live outside - no

matter how extreme the weather is. Many of these dogs

are so bored...all they have to do is bark all day and

night because nobody ever plays with them.

Many of my friends think we are nuts because our dogs

live full-time inside, with the a/c or heat on even

when the humans are not home. It's not a very

" country " way to treat the animals but it's the least

we can do for our pets!

That's an intolerable situation for almost anyone, I'd think. You don't have to be hypersensitive to be annoyed by barking dogs. Have you talked to any of your non-loud-dog-owning neighbors to see if they'll join you in quieting the neighborhood? There have got to be others around you who are irritated as well. Maybe you could talk to your city council (or whatever governing body your town has) about tightening up the nuisance barking laws? I had a barking dog next door, right outside my bedroom window, for about 2 years (the owners recently got rid of him), and it made life pretty miserable. No one could take a nap for fear of being awakened, and sometimes he would bark early in the morning or late at night, interrupting our sleep. The owners were jerks, who thought I should just leave them alone, but the police convinced them that they needed to keep Killer (his real name) quiet. Just

one dog was enough to drive me crazy, I don't know what I'd do if I lived in your neighborhood! The worst part is being at the mercy of your neighbors--they have the power to make life miserable and there's little you can do about it. It's awful. nobar_king wrote: I came to this group to get some support for this situation. This year I started to realize the extent of the barking around me. It
