Im so inspired by this man....I can tell the apprehensions he has

experienced and the overwhelming FAT food that is placed before us each

day!

I am also very curious about all the people on this site boasting about

their small weights and alot of energy and exercise and if they have

ever even actually been morbidly obese...I dont want to get anyone

upset but it seems there are alot of skinny people here worrying about

a couple extra pounds.

I grew up with a best friend that we would eat the same amount and do

the same activities and she was skinny and I continued to become chunky

and then fat. She continued to be skinny and I just think that some

folks are genetically destined to not have a weight problem and vica

verse.

Wish I could have walked with Steve but have just discovered his

adventure this week and hope that conquering moment is as fullfilling

as it should be.

I am active and definitely in what is considered obese range. I back pack and walk all over. That is one reason I am not a real stickler when it comes to the scale. I think weight is an issue but what you are physically capable of and your health are bigger issues.

Especially your health. In spite of being 60 pounds "overweight" I have excellent health. I want to lose the weight more for looks then for health issues, but health would become an issue later on if I don't. I am 49 at the moment.

Well Jo, I'm 5'7" and currently weigh 212 lbs. At one time, I weighed 309 pounds, so I think I qualified as morbidly obese. Actually even at 212, I'm still obese (darn it). But I'm walking my way down. You can see pictures of the fat me at my website. Don't worry, I'm not selling anything. Just wanted to share that there are people in this group who know what it is to be fat. To answer your question - there might be a lot of skinny people boosting about weight loss, probably just as many skinny people who were never fat that worry about their weight. It is a issue for all body types. Myself being skinner I also worry about my weight because I know what a little bit here and a little bit there can do to yourself. You won't see it go on but in a few months to a few years that little bit here and there adds up and you find yourself fat and wondering how in the world this happened to me. So I choose to be proactive and watch what I put in my mouth each day so that hopefully I won't be one of those people. For me it is much easier to fight the fight every day rather then look for reasons/excuses later on.

I lost 40+ pounds 10 years ago and I need to watch my weight

carefully. I worry about those few pounds because I know how soon

those few can turn into more <g> Whether it be a little or a lot of

pounds we all have to do the same things to lose it.

I think everyone who joins this group sees themself as having a

similar problem with food and exercise. We would all tend to eat

more than we do and exercise less if it were not for this thing

called fat. It's just that some of us have become converts to this

changed lifestyle of controlled eating and regular exercise. Many

of us converted before we became obese, some of us have become

believers only many pounds later. And it is very like a religion,

because in order to reap the benefits you must become a true

believer and practice the principles every day.

But Jonelle, it does not sound to me like you are a true believer

yet. Your comments about some folks being just destined to be thin

tell me that you are still trying to make excuses for your current

state. Believe me, every person can find excuses. I have to endure

a lot of stress at my job and sometimes at home too. Eating is a

nervous habit with me. That would be a great excuse if I didn't

want to change, but I DID want to change and I have. There is not

one day that goes by that is not difficult. I always think about

what I'm eating. I always have to make good choices, and

temptations are everywhere. I always have to exercise, even when I

have to sacrifice other activities. In your eyes, the amount I have

left to lose is not that much, only 25 or 30 pounds, but I will have

to continue this lifestyle for the rest of my life if I do not want

to regain the fat.

It is only when you move beyond the excuses that you will be

successful on your weight loss journey. I think this is one thing

Steve is trying to show us, and is why all of us find him

inspiring. No one here is trying to boast. The people who share

positive news are happy and excited about their progress and want

others to know that it is possible.

I hope that you find your way to becoming a true believer in a new

way of life.

Yes, right you are. I should have thought more about that before I

posted. Maybe what we have in common is that we can all draw

inspiration from a man who has taken drastic steps to change his

life for the better, and who is sticking to his program, day by day.

I agree, not everyone has a weight, food or health problem that reads

this group. I have been reading the messages for about 4-5 months now

and I don't have a weight problem. My original interested in how

Steve was surviving the journey. Things like camping, food

preparation, and safety just to mention a few.

It has been interesting reading all the post from people trying to

lose weight and get motivated to exercise. Although I say I don't

have a weight problem I did need to make some behavior changes about

a year ago, because of high cholesterol and blood pressure. As a

result I lost about 50 pounds. I went from size 38 paints to size 34.

Because I needed to quit smoking I started walking in the morning as

soon as I woke up in order to change the habit of smoking as soon as

got out of bed. The walk was one mile. As time went on I increased it

to 2 miles. I also started to run a little each day. At first only a

few yards then half a block, increasing the distance a little at a

time. So I change one habit for another. Now that I haven't smoked

sense last August I still walk or run every morning. I turned walking

and running into a habit. Now one year from when I started walking

and could only run a few yards, I ran a 5k race in Chicago a few

weeks ago and came in 10th place, which isn't bad for a 45 year old

guy that one year earlier smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day.

The other changes I made were to stop drinking soda. The caffeine

raised my blood pressure. I lost about 15 to 20 pounds quickly when I

stopped, but I did drink about four 2-leader bottles each day.

Between quitting nicotine and caffeine my blood pressure is normal

now.

To reduce my cholesterol I reduce the saturated fat in my diet. I

shifted from eating burgers to chicken at the fast food places. I eat

most things without the cheese and sauces that I once loved. I

switched from whole milk to skim milk.

As a general rule, I consume about 2000 calories a day. I figure

about 500 per meal and 250 for two snacks. If I am hungry I eat, but

instead of having chips and stuff that is high in fat and calories I

eat fruits and other natural foods.

Dan, you rock, my man!

I wish more people would take responsibility for getting healthy the

way that you did. So many are just content to take their blood

pressure and cholesterol meds and continue to do nothing about the

true cause of these problems.

Exactly, not everyone in this group has weight problems. I definitely do not and I can promise you, I never will either. Like I said, I am interested in the whole thing because of the journey. Steve will find that not only will he lose weight but he will encounter many things and many different kinds of people along the way.I for my part travel all over the world and treasure all the different kind of things I experienced along the way.
