Guest guest
Hi Aimee--I used to live on Okinawa! Quite a culture shock and climate shock for me at first, but I grew to like it there quite a bit. I sometimes think about going back, at least for a visit. It's really neat there, so I hope you enjoy it. Well, if you decreased the miralax by that much and then she started missing days, then I would try to get some more fiber and liquid into her, and I would do this very slowly...i.e. take your time with the process of trying less miralax and then trying more of a fiber product and increasing liquids. There is a new one called Fiber Sure on the market and it is not the same as Benefiber, so you could give that a try. The health food stores would also likely have some type of liquid magnesium that you could start her on... in the Files section of this board, I put a link to information about magnesium, and how much a person can have at any given age, so you could consult that for some general info. There are some powdered magnesium supplements online that you could try. For the b-vitamins, I would start with having her take a good multiple vitamin. Also explore dietary factors... you could try getting Doris Rapp's book, Is This Your Child, and then start to read about her rotation diet...you could have her off of all milk/dairy products for a week or two and see if that has any positive impact at all on her stools, and then reintroduce and see if she becomes constipated again, or try having her off of breads, etc. So it sounds like, when she is on the miralax, her bm's are kind of messy, i.e. too loose and soft? When you first started decreasing the miralax, you said it wasn't as messy as usual, so maybe it was more formed? If you stay on this decreased amount for several weeks, just take note of how often she goes...if she is able to go every other day, and they are more formed, then I would view that as an improvement in that going several times a day, loose and messy, isn't necessarily the greatest thing. You don't want food to be passing through her so fast that she's not getting full nutrient value from it, so if you can find that right balance where she is going once a day or every other day at the longest, then that would seem OK. Going several times a day with loose stuff may make it harder for her to potty train in the end; she may have too many accidents with it being so loose. So if I were you, I'd stay somewhere near that dose you are using right now, but try the fiber sure and increased liquid intake, and then look into the magnesium--just a little. Post again and let us know how it's been going--I see that you wrote this last Saturday--so how has she done this week? Did you stay at the reduced dose?
