Guest guest
Hi Marilyn and Welcome:-)) Sounds like you are doing just fine. In future it would be best to switch the cheese cloth for a more finely wonven cloth so tha " critter " such as ants and fruit flies can't get through. When you introduce KT to your son or anyone they should start with just a small amount, if he is sensitive I would just put a tablespoon of KT in water or juice and slowly increase the amount over days or weeks, even months. It is also important for everyone who drinks Kombucha to also drink lots of plain water. Guest guest
There is a lot of hope for your baby. Your son is young and not a high degree of curvature. You are in the right place the people here are so great and so helpful. First thing I would do is go to the database at the CAST website and find the doctor closest to you that does the Mehta Casting. Call and talk to the care coordinator there and that person will be a huge help to you. You have to pull at their heart and let them know that you know they are one of the only doctors that does the procedure and you need their help to help your baby. Listen to all of the thinks that people on this site tell you, but most important listen to what has to say. She is such a nice person and you can call her any time you need to. Her number is posted on here somewhere, she is great and very helpful. Your son is going to be fine but you must act quickly. You have to be confindent and "Politely Pushy". You have to speak for him and get him the care he needs. I hope I have helped and if you have any questions I will answer them to the best of my ability.Beth Rettinger Mother Of Rettinger 15 Months 60+ degrees, just got accepted to SLCWaiting on Appointment DateSubject: New to the groupTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Monday, June 29, 2009, 9:47 AM I just joined this group with the hopes of learning as much as I can from personal stories about infantile scoliosis and Mehta casting or other methods of treatment. My son, Camden, is six months old. I brought him to his pediatrician when he was two months old because I thought his spine seemed crooked. She referred us to a pediatric orthopedic specialist who diagnosed Camden with Torticollis and scheduled us to followup with xrays at six months. Camden had PT for his Torticollis, which is mild, but has not improved. Around four months his left side of his back began to bulge out. The therapist thought it might be something muscular. Camden just had his first xrays last Monday and was diagnosed with infantile (idiopathic) scoliosis. His curve is 24 degrees. Of course were are scared and very overwhelmed. We live in NM and right now are trying to get a second opinion on what should be done next. He is supposed to have an MRI toward the end of July. I look forward to learning more about your journeys and to finding support in getting the right care for our son.
Guest guest
Welcome to the group! So glad you found us.I would suggest you going to the FILES section and reading the article written by Dr. Mehta. ****Growth as a corrective force in the early treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis***Very important you understand this treatment. I think Beth also suggested checking out the DATABASE for a list of doctors. These are all doctors treating babies/children who have been trained on the Mehta way of casting. Also make sure you call the hospitals to make sure they are indeed still using this method. And Texas ish Rite Hospital for Children also has 2 doctors that do this casting method. They are not on that list. Please let us know how we can help. Ask any and all questions that may come to mind. Guest guest
Hi, , welcome to CAST! Beth gave you great advice. The best news is that if your child does have progressive infantile scoliosis, you caught it young- that is a major, major advantage. The human spine grows 50 percent before the age of 2, and the casting harnesses the child's natural growth, like the redirection of a vine growing up a wall. Do get in touch with a Mehta trained doctor near you or get into the Shriners system at one of the hospitals that does Mehta method EDF casting. Send them a copy of your X-rays. It's great that you have an MRI scheduled to rule out anything else. If you can, move any appointments up or take cancellation slots- ask to be put on a list- only because the curve can progress rapidly. The lower the curve number when you begin casting, generally the less casts you have to do. For example, had we gotten our son into a cast about 2 months sooner, we would likely have had a year or less of casting, now we will most likely have 2 years, so time is a very big factor. In our case, we also had a 2nd MRI ordered after the first one, both of which were booked 2 months in the future (so four months of waiting). Had we waited for all of that before contacting Shriners in Salt Lake City, our son would've had a much worse outlook for his future. Thank goodness we pushed for cancellations slots and got them. There is a lot of information to take in, but you are being so proactive already, which is wonderful. Ask any and all questions of myself and the group! Guest guest
Hi , My son also has torticollis and everyone told us his "muscles" were developing abnormally because of it. Around 5-6 months old I knew something else was going on but his Ped and PT therapist all assured me it was fine. By the time he was diagnosed he was 11 months old with a 42 degree curve . By the time I found out about casting he was in the 60's and by the time he got a cast he was in the 90's. My son has benefited from the casting but it will never fully straighten him like the younger children with less curve. He will have surgeries for his entire childhood. I do not mean to scare you at all I just wish I would have been told about casting. I don't want anyone to be in the same situation as we are in today if possible. There is still a lot to find out and testing to be done but you are in the right place and you have found it at the right time. Please let me know if I can help you in any way. mother to Finn, three years old, in 7th cast from Chicago Subject: New to the groupTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Monday, June 29, 2009, 9:47 AM I just joined this group with the hopes of learning as much as I can from personal stories about infantile scoliosis and Mehta casting or other methods of treatment. Guest guest
Hi , welcome to the group! I am relatively new myself and have gotten so much peace of mind and great guidance from the group. I must tell you that speaking directly to when I found ISOP was a blessing because I was LOST. I literally knew nothing about IS and was just told by 2 spceialist that there was nothing they could do for my daughter. I know is busy and dealing a lot with her own daughter right now but if you can, try to call her--she'll give you a step-by-step of what you should be doing. Everyone here on the site will help you too. They are so wonderful and forthcoming, you are in good hand(: let me know if you need anything.
