Guest guest
Hi and All I hope to add a bit to this discussion. I am one of those rare chiarians with PTC that actually feels much better after an LP. Take a peek at my post a while back about it. It's pretty detailed. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group//message/1377 (it's message #1377) My guess is, if the NSG was smart enough to suggest it, he is more than likely very capable of doing the actual LP. Technique is EVERYTHING so only let him (the NSG) do the actual tap. Not a resident or an assistant....insist on the neurosurg ONLY!! Try to keep an open, calm mind. Take yourself somewhere else while they are actually doing the tap and please don't get yourself frantically worried about the possibility of a blood patch. I've had at least 30 LP's (both before and after my decompression) and I've only ever needed a blood patch twice. Once was at the hands of a nurse practitioner at the Mayo clinic BEFORE I knew someone with little experience should never do an LP on a Chiarian. There has also been no change whatsoever on my MRI's. Be prepared, but try not to worry. And by the way, the caffeine helps to normalize the intracranial pressure. Not too much though, or you can actually cause a leak. The same with the fluids. Don't be too drastic. The best thing is to take it easy for the rest of the day. Absolutely NO lifting AT ALL!! Not even 5 pounds!! The pressure measurement is very important, and , I am so sorry to hear you went through an LP and never had the opening pressure measured. If you have any questions after you read my previous post, please feel free to write! All the best, in Pittsburgh
Guest guest
My son has had LP's twice and each time has felt considerably better after them. Why? Because draining of csf relieves the build up of high cranial pressure. :-) So, I'm not so sure that it's actually all that rare :-) At least not if your one of those people dealing with high cranial pressure.
