Guest guest
i'm 20 and i've been on miralax for a couple years on and off. Now i'm on it regularly. I take a large dose as well (between 34 grams and 68 grams a day). I was worried about the high dosage too, so i started taking herbal supplements instead for a while, and then i ended up in the hospital with a rectal prolapse. so i advise staying on miralax. in terms of weight gain, yes, i've gained weight since being on it, but i'm almost positive that it's largely water weight that you don't have when you're not taking the stuff. miralax works by retaining water in your colon to give the matter bulk to pass it through. Thus, you're carrying around some extra weight it would seem. i don't intend to stop taking it anytime soon. i've had such hard times, taken so many medications for this, and been to the "King of Constipation" (no joke, that's what my doctor at home referred to him as). All have said there's nothing wrong with it. -em
Guest guest
Funny that you mention weight gain. My little boy has gained a couple of pounds since starting on it. But for him, that's a good thing. He was stuck at 29 pounds from 2 years to 3 1/2 years. I'm glad miralax is working well for you. Good luck. > i'm 20 and i've been on miralax for a couple years on and off. Now i'm on it > regularly. Guest guest
Hello there, Could you please tell me what other things that you have tried (herbals). I am in the same boat and I want to get off the miralax. Also, what kind of diet are you on? Are you taking any fiber suppliment along with the miralax. I needed miralax after I did some fasting for a church. I have to believe that there is another alternative. I thank you for your honest answers. Best regards, Will > i'm 20 and i've been on miralax for a couple years on and off. Now i'm on it > regularly. Guest guest
The thing to remember too is that the prolapse may have happened while using the herbals but part of it could have been that herbals, depending on what they are, some will stimulate the colon wall to do the contractions, kind of like what the colon is supposed to do in the first place. But since a person with constipation who is on miralax obviously doesn't have good peristalsis (contractions) then their body is not used to the herbals stimulating it, and in the process of the contractions, it is moving down a lot of stool--new and " old " stool, and that can cause a large amount of stool to come down and if a person had low tone in the rectum to begin with, then you can have a rectal prolapse. My daughter had a near-rectal prolapse but it wasn't because of any supplementing, it was just because a large mass of stool moved down and she has low tone in her system to begin with, and so the prolapse almost happened. It was visible on the inside but it never pushed through the anal opening. Anyhow, just saying that if you are going to start herbals, if they are the kind that will actually stimulate peristalsis such as senna or cascara sagrada to name just a couple, then start out low and slow and keep on the miralax for the time being in order to make sure that the stool remains soft... make the process very gradual rather than a quick transition from miralax to herbals, so that you don't have a large mass of stool moving down quickly. Cascara sagrada is supposed to be a fairly safe herbal and it isn't as " crampy " on the abdomen as senna. My guess is that when you did the fasting, your body may have released a lot of stored up toxins in your liver and that could be where your constipation stems from-- the release of the toxins into the GI tract. You may want to try and work with a naturopathic doctor. A multiple mineral to include magnesium and selenium for sure given in two separate doses --one a.m. and one p.m., a complete B vitamin combo, vitamin C several times a day, benefiber, Fiber Choice chewables (not the sugar-free ones)right before bedtime, " probiotics " such as Culturelle one or two times a day, and some N-acetyl glucosamine would be what I would try if it were me.
