Guest guest
Hi everyone: I'm needing some feedback as I know I've slacked on this. My son with ASD is 5 and in a blended pre-K. His special ed certified teacher has been out since beginning of January except for about 4 days total due to health reasons. Basically we don't know when she's at school and when she isn't. There's been a sub but don't know about qualifications and the aides seem to be running things. I e-mailed the teacher to arrange a meeting for next week. Strangely, she asked if the principal could attend since she's " been out " , which I took as a defensive measure (CYA - cover your a**). Actually I looked forward to it because I want to voice my concerns to both of them. I'm not sure my son is making as much progress (no way to confirm) and has displayed more behavior issues this year. My wife and I are also anxious about his transition to kindergarten at his home school(will have aide) and want to work on this with teachers and school staff. Now today I find out the teacher will be out two more weeks (conveniently leads into spring break). Unsure about whether the meeting will take place. I want to meet with principal myself to voice concerns. Any suggestions on what I need to do? I want to get some answers before I resort to bigger step - calling ARD, etc. Whatever my son has done this year has been due to his own effort and in spite of the situation. I'm just mad at myself for not advocating enough and acting sooner! Oh and by the way, my son is supposedly in a " better " school district. Better if you want to play football but not if you have autism... but hey, this is Texas right?
