All those needing assistive communication device for child Dear Listmates:I have been seeing a lot of posts from parents wanting assistive communication products.I believe in DIVINE PROVIDENCE! Yesterday while waiting as my son was having a PT evaluation, I struck up a conversation with a lady who just happened to work for DYNAVOX.She told me that TEXAS received a GRANT to provide DYNAVOX to children with speech disorders FREE OF CHARGE!!!!! THESE DEVICES COST AROUND $6800 IF YOU HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET!!! This is the same company (Mayer-) that makes Boardmaker. She demonstrated the device for me a little. It has a pecs picture and when you point to the picture, the device says the word! It does a lot more and can be programmed individually to fit a child's needs. My son would not qualify as he has even more than functional language at this point! What I would have given if this had been available when he was non-verbal!! !So, all parent s out there in TEXAS with kids who qualify (it doen's have to be just autism, it is for speech disorder). Speech disorder is the only criteria. If you have an outside speech therapist, the therapist can sign off on the form to substantiate the speech disorder. If you do not have an outside speech therapist, then the school speech therapist would need to sign off. Some schools are not wanting to do this as they think then they will be responsible for paying for the device, BUT THISIS NOT TRUE.They would only be responsible if it were written into the ARD syaing, "[child] will be taught [skill] USING A DYNAVOX device."So let them know that that is not your intention. The devices would belong to the CHILD.I am so excited about this for you guys!!!The lady gave me permission for you to call her for info. Her name is McClure. The cell # is . The office number is 1-, ext. 7980. She is is the DFW area I think (I met her in Kaufman, Texas area). She said if she is not the rep in your area, she will direct you to the rep in your area. This is a chance for your limited speech children to get an assistive communication device that is AWESOME, so don't delay in getting the paper work going!!!You can also e-mail @ katie.hale@dynavoxt ech.comI hope this helps you guys!!!Haven
