Though the Governor's appointments office does have a small pool of parent applicants, they are looking for additional parents who might want to serve. Parent members must have a child 12 or under with direct experience with ECI. One of the parent seats is specifically for a parent of a child under 6. We would all like to see a good pool of parent applicants. DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR YOUTH LEADERSHIP FORUM - APRIL 15th High school students who are a junior or senior with a disability are invited to apply for the Texas Statewide Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) in Austin, July 26-30, 2010.The annual forum provides all-expense paid leadership training and experiences to 30 individuals with disabilities. It is hosted by the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A & M University, under a grant from the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities. Students who are selected (YLF delegates) are empowered to advocate for individuals with disabilities and influence public policy. Thefour-day training program includes a tour of the State Capitol, a meeting with state level officials and the Governor and one day of mock legislative sessions. Delegates are selected through a competitive application process. While priority will be given to students who are Texas Regional YLF and Advocacy Trainees, all students are encouraged to apply. Applications for students are due April 15, 2010. The applications and more information are online at http://txylf.tamu.edu. The Texas Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities wants to hear from citizens with disabilities, family members, caregivers and professionals in the field of disability issues. They want to know what you think are the major needs and issues facing Texans with disabilities. Your feedback is needed and welcomed. The Committee makes recommendations to the Governor and legislature each biennium on issues related to Texans with disabilities. It structure sits work into ten broad issue areas: access, communication, education,emergency management, health, housing, recreation and the arts,transportation, veterans and workforce.
