At some point in the future it may become inevitable as cost containment continues to take hold. I have heard very good arguments by PT's and OT's alike that there is much inefficiency in having a PT and an OT see a patient separately. Much of these discussions have arisen out of discussion about the APTA Guide to P.T. Practice and its statements regarding ADL's.

I cannot say I am " sure " this will happen, but if the current trends in healthcare bear any witness to our future, I would consider it a definite possibility.

The next question regarding this, how long until the professions combine? With all of the pressure to reduce costs and eliminate duplication, how long will it be before PT's and OT's are one? Is it smart to maintain separate disciplines? Mark Dwyer, MHA, PTKansas City, Kansasmdwyer1@...
