WOW THATS A NEAT IDEA!!

Re: Steve starts the stretch run to NYC

> What are we all going to do when he makes it?

I propose that every reader of this list, who has five

extra pounds or more, commit to doing a sixty minute

walk, rain or shine, the day Steve arrives in NYC.

Deal?

If someone can't walk a continuous 60 minutes they could break it up into smaller sections that total 60 minutes. 2 X 30, 3 X 20, etc.

Mona this is good exercise but it doesn't have the cardo effect of one 60 minute walk. The institude has demonstrated that it requires at least 45 minutes continuous to really spark the cardo effect we are searching for.

If you will allow me to put in my 2 cents worth...

Basic Premise - any exercise is better than no exercise.

Having established that basis, one trainer with whom I worked once told me that, for weight loss and cardiovascular health, the true benefits of walking to not "kick in" until after a minimum 20 minutes walking. After that, the benefits increase exponetially.

The results of walking 60 minutes at one time have a much greater impact in respect to your goals than walking 30 minutes, 2 times, or walking 20 minutes, three times.

Bottome line, if you can only walk 20 minutes, do it! But if you can work up to walking further, the results will be better.

I agree...even tho they say you need 20 minutes to start doing good...they also tell you that if you don't walk at all 5 or 10 minutes is beneficial! Just do it as often as possible.

Karl,I have heard that about the 20 minute thing too. But a person has to start somewhere. Later, .havtosail@... wrote: If you will allow me to put in my 2 cents worth... ABSOLUTELY! Start with 5 minutes. Start with 10 minutes. JUST START!

(My wife is also reading this list, and will beat me over the head with this when I get home, since I have not walked regularly since before Thanksgiving!)

Karl and ,

I have no doubt whatsoever that you guys are right

about the benefits of walking 60 minutes or more at a

time. All I meant was that if the group decides that

we are all going to walk in honor of Steve on the day

he arrives in New York, that no one should feel left

out if they cannot walk 60 minutes, or even if they

are unable to walk at all. They should do what they

feel they can do. We have a wide range of people in

this group with a wide range of abilities and

limitations.

By the way, I think the diversity is one of the things

that makes this group so great. We have marathon

runners and people who can barely walk a block helping

each other out and treating each other with dignity.

My thanks again to Steve for starting the group!

I remember many year ago when my mom wanted to start walking and lose weight she could barely walk a block. Eventually though she ran a marathon in under 4 hours. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step...or something like that! jjsmth@... wrote: I agree...even tho they say you need 20 minutes to start doing good...they also tell you that if you don't walk at all 5 or 10 minutes is beneficial! As someone who only posts occasionally but who has been following Steve's

adventures

pretty faithfully, I have to say I'll also feel a bit of a loss once Steve's Big

Walk is over!

What a series of years it's been -- first the Star Wars series ended, then in

2006 JK Rowling is

due to publish the final chapter of the Harry Potter series, and sometime before

that

(presumably!) Steve will make his triumphant entrance to the billion-footed

city.

Well, all things come to an end, and I'm sure Steve will end it on a high note.

I'll keep

following during the final stretch. Best wishes to all.
