The only way forward is to make assumptions. The next step is to attempt to disprove those assumptions (the Null Hypothesis). If the assumptions can be disproved then they may be invalid , assuming (again) that the methodology was sound. The failure in todays world of "Publish or Perish" scientific endeavour is the selection of only one of multiple possible assumptions to test. Thus statements are made implying the truth of one assumption in the light of the failure to test competing alternatives.

The success or otherwise is dependent on information available and the techniques available to gather it. Thus the use of the internet has exposed an extremely large number of flaws in the Peer Reviewed publication process by enabling rapid and wide dissemination of critiques and additional information, both supporting and refuting a particular viewpoint..
