Guest guest
This is exactly how I suspect 4s is. The OCD type responses evolve after the 4s hypersensitivity (physical) has developed, and then it appears as if the person is just "mental." But the "mental" part does not explain the ability to hear sooooo very well! Thanks for sharing--I think you are right on the nose! Kathy Howe -----Original Message-----From: Soundsensitivity [mailto:Soundsensitivity ]On Behalf Of maryjanefrombuffaloSent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 10:43 AMTo: Soundsensitivity Subject: Re: New poll for Soundsensitivity I just realized I left out one additional part of the post - the concept that those who have OCD and 4S may have developed OCD *in response to* 4S. Compulsive behaviors are often conditioned (learned) responses to something else, like something in the environment. Compulsive behaviors are also attempts at gaining, re-gaining, or maintaining control over something - anything - when faced with something that bothers them. We often can't control the noises others make, or cannot take steps to directly control these noises (e.g., asking the Big Boss to stop talking with his mouth full in a board meeting). So we develop the hyper-alertness, the throat-clearing, the twitching, the constant scanning the environment for what might be an offender. It helps. It would not be a surprise if the success of these coping strategies don't lead the subconscious into applying OCD behaviors to other areas of life outside of 4S. And then, to an outsider, we apear to be OCD people who have silly OCD problems about other people's noises, when in fact it might be putting the effect before the cause. My professional colleagues, the few I've told about my sound issues, are either nicely polite or dismissive (one laughed in my face), but I know from their reactions they suspect it's all based OCD or something related, not an auditory issue at all. But I, too, can hear gum from miles away when others can't, like the coworker four offices down who cracks her gum while typing on her computer (far away from, and not facing, her half-closed office door). Sigh.(MJ the MSW)>> Jane, just wanted to say there is a lot of wisdom in what you > said.> > However, IF you have been 'diagnosed' with OCD.> > I am interested.> > MJ>
Guest guest
definitely. a "gum cracknasty" is a "gum cracknasty" whether they are male or female. or anything else for that matter.a Satow wrote: Just a suggestion...on this poll, shouldn't we add a response option that says "I don't find any difference between whether males or females annoy me"? Guest guest
I also have a colleague with a speech impediment and I really struggle to be around him. It's such a shame - I joke to my partner that our office is like " clash of the afflictions " as we have someone with the shakes who drives me bonkers and someone with a speech impedient who drives me bonkers, and they drive me bonkers because of my OWN affliction. They probably drive other people bonkers too - and I'm sure I do the same for them! Bonnie xxx > ** Low Priority ** > > How about the SHss sound. Guest guest
** Low Priority ** ette from Dayton, Ohio brace yourself for the ride ahead. You have the advantage though. I am sure that the majority of us did not know that there were others who suffered from this -- what ever it is -- an affliction? We just thought we were going bonkers or wanted to gouge our ears out going into rages because these sounds are painful, or just thought that we had just turned into an intolerable mean spirited old (54) lady. Luck to you mate.
