Guest guest
It's amazing how we just had some wonderfull explanations of how an observant doctor treats his patients using a full protocol of antimicrobials and anti slime therapies yet we still have a whole group of other doctors still practising a blind/stupid man approach.Surgery IMO equals plumbing, which may equal short term benefit....I would absolutely positively get this surgeon to refer you to a couple of previous success stories that have succeeded with this surgery upto and more than six months earlier. > > After a year of chronic sinusitis, I'm getting surgery. Guest guest
Well, I did my homework, saw the "best" ENTS and was even scheduled for surgery but cancelled at the last minute. Mainly because it seemed that the risk in many of these surgeries outweighs the benefits. Personally, I was very worried after reading so many negative accounts. In April, I had the baloon sinuplasty done (also image guided) to slightly widen the openings to my sinuses which were badly infected and suck out all the goop in my head. I was especially concerned because the sphenoid sinuses were infected and that's not a good thing at all. Normal recovery time for the baloon sinuplasty is one day compared to 2 or more weeks for the latest types of endoscopic surgery. We're talking no nasal packing, no bruising, no bleeding for days on end, no major discomfort, no nausea, no horrible headaches, no damage to the important cilia, etc., etc. I had what seemed like increased allergy sensitivity for a couple of months with a lot of sneezing, but that is now gone. Of course, I'm not a normal patient anymore and any kind of procedure knocks me on my butt, but I can say that I had no negative effects from the sinuplasty itself and feel that my breathing is definitely clearer and I no longer wake up stuffy or headachey with loads of mucous running down my throat every morning. (note: my symptoms were so "mild" that no doc ever suspected I had sinus disease until I had some CT scans done that shocked everybody. My sinuses were bad!) When it comes to the different kinds of sinus surgeries, I can't recommend the baloon sinuplasty enough. And of course I concur with Tony and that addressing the biofilms is essential for truly eradicating chronic sinus disease. It's possible that you could be one of the lucky ones who's helped by ESS, but personally, I wouldn't do it unless I had absolutely no other options. With the new baloon sinuplasty available now, I wouldn't even consider it. If you do go for it, then please be sure your doc takes cultures and prescribes follow up antibiotics accordingly. This is really important to the success of your surgery and recovery. By the way, the surgery your doc is describing isn't really a big deal. At least where I am, every doc I saw was using the same techniques. Although I'm not familiar with the CT scan you're talking about. I'd definitely like to know more about that if you can recall more. pennyspsgroup1 <spsgroup1@...> wrote: After a year of chronic sinusitis, I'm getting surgery. Would someone knowthe different ways that surgeries can be done and has anyone beenoperated on this way? I also know of the new balloon surgery. A coupleof other dr's I saw use a tv screen of some sort. Of course I don'twant to be bothered with this, but it seems like I have a choice ofsurgery or a permanently clogged up head.Thanks. Guest guest
I had this surgery one week ago today. Where are you having the surgery done? --- spsgroup1 <spsgroup1@...> wrote: > After a year of chronic sinusitis, I'm getting > surgery. Guest guest
You had the ESS? I hope my comments weren't discouraging. I thought you were having more of an exploratory, suction type of procedure. How are you feeling? Did the doc do the nasal packing or no? I know there's two view points on this. It's probably too soon to tell, but do you feel it was successful? This is not your first surgery, right? How did it compare to previous ones? pennyMarie Mayberry <msmabrry@...> wrote: I had this surgery one week ago today. Guest guest
Hi Penny and Marie- I've not yet had the image guided surgery done (you can Google that and get more information). It will out of Hackensack University Medical Hospital in afew weeks. I think I've answered my own question about different types of surgeries- this link explains them: http://www.entnet.org/healthinfo/sinus/sinus_surgery.cfm I'm a bit iffy about doing this, but the middle/top of my head has felt like a large rock has been sitting in it for almost a whole year (sphenoid now has stuff floating inside). It also feels like something is pressing into my left eye (this is year 3, but I previously didn't know it was due to a sinus problem). I also have a suspected fungal ball in my right sinus. I was told that this will open my passageways but won't cure my sinusitis, as my problem is the result of a mold allergy. I know 6 people who has surgery 4 it helped them and they had little problems for years afterwards. 2 there was no change. > > > After a year of chronic sinusitis, I'm getting > > surgery.
