Does your wife have it to the degree that she is involuntarily bothered to the point of anxiety? My daughter has 4s and I have developed an acute awareness of her trigger sounds and get irritated when I see obnoxious gum chewers. However, although I am aware of these sounds and annoyed by them, it is not the same. I can control my reactions whereas my daughter cannot.

I think this is a sympathetic reaction that loved ones develop because of the sufferer.

Hi Karyn et al., I have been watching for someone to mention that a non-blood relative (e.g. a spouse) already has, or else acquired, 4S. My wife seems to have acquired some 4S sensitivity over our 22 yrs of marriage. And it follows the same sort of patterns: triggered by family, co-workers; chewing, smacking, cereal bowls clinking. My naive take on it:a.) it may not be such an obscure thing after all (others have said they meet people all the time who can identify with this problem; apparently I married someone who came to identify ...)b.) it might be something that can be "activated," but is hard to "de-activate"? (she never spoke of having this as a youngster, but did describe taunting by a brother that sort of sounds like his 4S reaction)c.) might correlate with "introvert" types (refer to Keirsey.com or Meyers-Briggs Temperament Indicator or similar) ... we are both introverts, as are most of the people who answered the poll in this group ... [however, perhaps it's mainly introverts that spend time on internet message boards!] P.>> ... Strangely, my husband has developed a slight case of 4s now with > his family too, I guess from hearing me complain about it contstantly.
