first appointment somoetimes as I get so frustrated and come across as a

crazy person and some drs even drop me as my health problems so comp-lex and

hard to treat.

any advise for how to get what I need, proper testing and meds sensitivities

If you stick around, you will hear the same story over and over.

Many have opted to bypass the obstacles as much as is possible.

While testing can be a useful guide, it can also be a burden, for PCR

tests are about as good as it gets but to get one you may have to go

private.

And often getting the treatments can be cheaper.

Amy, the good news is you got a physician's referral. That gives you

a little credibility/leverage with the i.d. doc.

Somehow, you've got to get it across to this doc that you are sick,

and that you're convinced it's caused by an infection.

Give him/her all the evidence you have to support an infectious

basis, whether it's a positive reaction to abx, or something else

that supports this scenario to encourage this doc to try to help

you.

make a compelling case. Ask for tests, scans, etc. that can locate a

difficult to find focal infection (i.e. sinuses). Otherwise, you can

get written off.

If he somehow doesn't believe he can help you, then insist he refer

you to someone who can (not psychiatric). Tell him you're too young

to be thrown on the scrap heap. That you want to live your life and

you need help getting healthy so you can.

Be insistent that he work with you to figure things out.

p.s. yes, i.d. docs (at least some) believe in mold. The ones I know

seem to think it's ususally a co-infection.

Re: pain meds. I have to say that ultracet (pain medication) has

been far more helpful than it has been problematic for me. I think

the stress of living with pain can be more detrimental than the side

effects of the drug.

Strangely enough, Ultracet has helped more with my " allergic "

reaction to the sinus surgery than anything else has. Somehow, it's

making my recovery tolerable, even though pain hasn't been the

problem. I got desperate when nothing else was working with the

severe allergy like discomfort and tried the Ultracet, and

surprisingly, it worked.

You need a doc who's willing to work with YOU, since we're all

different and have different reactions to meds. Someone who will try

to help YOU, not prescribe platitudes.

Penny:

Did you just have that new sinus surgery?

It's sort of like angioplasy- only in the sinus right?

Are you draining infections now?

Yes, Barb. Had it last tuesday.

So far I'm very hopeful, also a bit alarmed and amazed.

My sphenoids were badly infected, and according to my research,

sphenoid infections are fatal and need to be caught quickly. Doc

said the goo in my head looked " years old " . Very thick stuff. Lots

of pus.

I'm seeing doc for follow up today. Should get culture results and

switch up antibiotics. I've been on Omnicef but I don't think it's

strong enough.

The side effects to this baloon sinuplasty have been fairly minimal

compared to reported side effects of regular endoscopic surgery.

(Also, it appears that the need for follow up surgery is much less

with this procedure.) Only minimal bleeding, no stints or packing

required. Still have clots coming out which I think are causing most

of my allergic type symptoms. Woke up feeling semi-decent today. I'm

sure I wouldn't have fared as well if I'd had the other surgery.

My worst reactions post surgery have been severe allergy type

symptoms, itchy eyes, sneezing, overall allergy type malaise and

extreme fatigue. Some headaches (severe to mild). Some fever. I've

also got blurred vision. It turns out the sphenoid sinuses are much

riskier for surgery because they are far back in the head and very

close to the opthamolic nerve, the pituitatry, the brain etc. But

also a very bad place for an infection to turn into osteomyelitis so

I'm thankful she found it. I'm hoping the sphenoid bone and sinus

walls are still intact and not damaged by osteomyelitis.

Oddly, the medication that has helped the allergy symptoms the most

are the pain med, Ultracet. Seems to dampen the allergic reaction

down better than anything else.

The most remarkable thing is that right after the surgery, my neck

and shoulder pain vanished. And it was severe. The neck pain has

been around forever, the shoulder pain has been getting

progressively worse for over a year. I get my sphenoids cleared out

and the pain magically disappears and my arm rotation is vastly

improved. My jaw also felt better, until I started feeling like I

might be developing a new sinus infection.

So we'll see what the doc says today. I know 2 of her patients, who

she worked with for over a year each to get well. I'm praying I'm

another one she can help.

penny

p.s. I think a person less ill than myself would have a much easier

go of the surgery. They say many are back on their feet in a day.

But I went into this sick to begin with. I also think my body did

not handle the anesthesia well at all. They wouldn't let me leave

recovery for a long time. My heart rate was too high, my bladder

wouldn't empty (indicative of kidney problems). Going in, they

couldn't get a bp on me and I almost couldn't get admitted because

my bp was so low (which is typical of me that early in the morning).

They also had difficulty finding a vein for the i.v.

After surgery I woke up with an extremely sore throat, and I'm still

very hoarse. I think they shoved something down it. My body temp was

96 the rest of the day (I felt very cold internally) and I also have

scratches on my upper arms. I don't think surgery was especially

smooth. I'm going to ask for the surgical notes, see if they're

telling me everything.

Penny:

To familarize myself with the sinuses I went to

Dr. W Techenor's Sinus scans.

http://www.sinuses.com/ctscan.htm

Good God woman! you stay in a pretty upbeat mood for what ails you.

That operation sounded serious enough to me.

So will all that old pus come out as softened mucous? How goes it

drain of there in a timely fashion - theose little sinuses are pretty

derned narrow.

Keep us posted after you see your scans.

I hope this imporves you for a long time

and thank god you have a good Doc).
