old licorice

My daughter's doctor wants her to try some licorice, which she used

with fairly good results about six years ago.

I have in front of me a sealed, unopened jar of Licorice--Glycyrrhiza

glabra, 5:1 solid extract, made by Scientific Botanicals, preservative

free. The expiration date is 03/99. (Yes, I'm a saver.)

Does anyone know if it would be harmful to try such old licorice? Or

would it simply be ineffective? (Maybe I'll just open it and see if it

explodes. Stand back.)
