Guest guest
Thanks for the post about magnesium. I will definitely tuck this away and will start supplementing for magnesium. I've long wondered about the calcium RDA in our country -- we have some of the highest calcium intakes and also a high hip fracture rate, while other countries like Singapore have lower calcium intakes and lower hip fracture rates. Magnesium and other deficiencies in the US population are probably significan factors for this. One thing to note about magnesium is that high magnesium intake may not be safe for people whose kidneys are not up to par, because the body can't eliminate the excess magnesium fast enough. On a separate note, I wanted to add a recommendation for two other posts I saw a while ago - omega 3 supplementation and how to get your kids to drink Miralax. The one omega 3 my daughter will take (and she is a very selective eater) is Children's DHA from Nordic Naturals. They are little strawberry flavored pea-sized gel capsules, and she really likes them! I call them strawberry poppers, so the term cod liver oil doesn't turn her off. She just chews them and spits out the empty gel capsule. Nordic Naturals is pharmaceutical grade so they have removed the mercury and PCB's, and have their product 3rd party tested. They also make a point to use the freshest fish. http://www.nordicnaturals.com/professional/whynordicnaturals.asp The only way I could get my daughter to drink a full dose of Miralax when she was on it was to mix it in with Swiss Miss hot chocolate or juice " pop " (carbonated juice). It used to be very difficult to get her to drink water at all (until recently, she'd drink maybe just several tablespoons of water a day if I didn't push her to drink more). (But this wasn't the cause of her constipation, because adequate fluid intake did not help her constipation noticeably. So I had to use her sweet tooth to get her to drink enough. (I did not feel good about all the sugar, but she would not drink enough Miralax any other way). ~
