What's this about the kid next door? Does he have a problem too? Jeaniemelody andersen wrote: Hey everybody, I had an appt with Lily's Gi Doc today. Boy is he hard headed! He told me miralax is his favorite but if I didn't want to use it fine but you need to get her on somthing and get this under control stop trying to find the cause and just get her regular he said I don't watn to have to take half of her colon out like I am having to do to this 12 year old kid

next door. Lets get her fixed now! so he prescribed to me lactalose and senakot. So I hope that this works and that we can get her regular. He also said that i could use probotics they are his favorite and he loves them and that will help out greatly! So we are gonna go from there. My baby Juli is constipated so bad she is the 4month old so I will be getting her to the doc on wed and see if I can get her to a different GI doc and see what they say! No he was telling me about a patient of his and that he is 12 and that his mom kept fighting to know what caused the constipation instead of treating it and now he is 12 and he is having half of his colon removed because it no longer functions and he did not want that to happen to Lily. He said he don'tcare what I use just get her regular.Jeanie Ward wrote: What's this about the kid next door? Does he have a problem too? Jeaniemelody andersen

Geez! sounds like we go to the same GI.. They all love Mirlax. I'm so not looking forward to going to a new GI (even though we will be) because I don't want to go down that road again.

I would NOT appreciate the threats either. I'm sure you of all people want her regular. There's nothing wrong with wanting to know why!

Oh, It crossed my mind, if it was enviromental, like in the water on your street or something like that. I thought how strange to have a kid next door, with the same problem. Amy, don't forget to bring your previous records, and let him know up front, if he's had a rectal exam recently, I had a gi doc do that without asking, then your child has to go through it again. Then, after the fact, you let the doc know he/she just had one at the previous doc. This happened to me. He never read her records and did it without my consent and I think they do it so they can charge you................at the cost of your child and yourself being violated. There's another woman on this board that had it happen to her child by the same doc that did it to mine, and we live in different states! JeanieAmy wrote: Geez! sounds like we go to the same GI.. Hi Melody, well, at least you got somewhere with him. And yes, getting the colon onto something for maintenance is a good first step because the hard blocked stools have to stop. And I wish he would rx probiotics for everybody... it's sad to think that he's going to take out half of the 12 year old's colon! That's a drastic surgery, and to think, what could have helped that child prevent getting to that point... that's very sad. Docs need to think outside of the box...they can't have a "favorite" rx for "everybody" because we're not all the same, and we're not all going to respond to the same remedy. melody andersen wrote: Hey everybody, I had an appt with Lily's Gi Doc today. Well, but that's kind of a bad attitude of the doctor to take-- that this is all the mom's fault for trying to know what caused the constipation instead of treating it... I believe that it is important to do both--treat, AND search to find the cause at the same time that you are using some type of treatment. Because if you only treat, then you're going to be treating for a lifetime... if you understand the cause, then you can work to change it... But what the doctor needs to change is, his own attitude-- instead of fighting with the mom, he should have been working harder at helping her find that middle ground...what to treat with and working to figure out the cause. It's like high blood pressure... is it OK for a doc to just write an rx and never ask any questions or investigate why the patient has high blood pressure? No. They should treat it with the medications AND talk to the patient

and work with them to find out the cause, so that they can make some lifestyle or dietary changes to help lower it. They might always need to be on the medication, but if they can achieve a lower dose and a healthy lifestyle, then that's great. That's all we ask for our kids-- don't just write a script for miralax and send us out the door, to keep our kids on this for the rest of their lives...work on finding out the cause, and making changes so that the child doesn't need much of a stool softener/laxative, or maybe no prescription at all, IN TIME. melody andersen wrote: No he was telling me about a patient of his and that he is 12 and that his mom kept fighting to know what caused the constipation instead of treating it and now he is 12 and he is having half of his colon removed because it no longer functions and he did not want that to happen to Lily. Hi Melody--I'm glad that she is responding to the lactulose... it is so much more benign than miralax...just be sure to keep up enough liquid intake--it does need liquid to "work", but also continue to reinforce a regular "sit time"-- she went four times in one day-- chances are that will decline in time, perhaps to one time a day, but you really do want to teach her how to have her body "go" at a regular time each day. The body needs that predictability as well as that feeling of "it's safe to go"... and by establishing the sit time, that will help. Also teach her that as she sits, to think about "try to make a toot" (i.e. pretend like you are going to pass gas)--that will help the muscle relax. Keeping with the lactulose, with your combined efforts for establishing a sit time and a regular bowel movement, along with continuing to explore what types of foods "help" her go (i.e. oranges, or celery sticks, or fruit-eze prune jam, or Plum Smart juice,

or whole grain bread, or... ) that way, in time, you will be able to keep her on whatever dietary changes help her go, while being able to reduce the lactulose some day, slowly, as you said. Please keep posting periodically to update us on how she is doing! About the 12 year old boy... that is so sad. I think part of it is due to the chronic mega colon for so long, as well as just having gone so many years without it. There is a good website, although I don't agree with all of it, but I am impressed at the info that I have read in terms of what do you do to help those kids that have been chronically holding in and are having leakage, called soilingsolutions.com and to me, I would prefer to see a child go through that program, which does involve use of suppositories and enema's, but the important thing is that it seems to help them establish that understanding of "how do I

eliminate", which after so many years of not having normalcy, these kids really do need to LEARN. Even for my dd, who is now having success, I can see just how important that learning process really is. Because for so many years of constipation, it is going to take years to establish normalcy for her. Wmelody andersen wrote: You are so right! I started the Lactalose today 1 serving today and she has gone 4 times! No pain, no crying I did

not even know she had gone only that I smelt it 4 times. I am so happy. He said that once she goes normal for 1 month then they can start counting 6 months to 1 year of normal bowel movements then we can stop the meds. dlowly of course! I am excited! So said about the 12 year old they say after so long of being constipated your intestines stop working and they have to be removed!m w <merrywbee> wrote: Hi Melody, well, at least you got somewhere with him.
