Guest guest
Barb, If you're extremely low in magnesium to begin with, then the calcium, which is an antagonist, doesn't really help much. Some of us who've been chronically sick probably have a bad cal/mag imbalance and need to increase our magnesium. It's much harder to get Mg. from our diets than calcium is. I don't bother with calcium supplementation, except through food sources, where I know I get plenty. I do take lots of magnesium to keep my muscles from cramping like crazy. I agree with you, I do believe that the Benicar MAY have an effect on the electrolyte balance (although it could also be the other drugs I'm on) but my strong inclination is that somehow Benicar affects the electrolytes and this is what causes the reported muscular weakness/cramping. I also believe it affects the hormones (whether through the 1,25d hormone or some other mechanism, I don't know) because my need for thyroid meds has dropped significantly. However, I can't seem to get my Thy. numbers regulated as easily now. It's more erratic. Some people were worried about the effect of Benicar on adrenal/aldesterone, but my tests came back fine. penny > > Why do these Docs prescribe Magnesium without calcium? > Have you ever asked?
