Guest guest
.. I think what I might do myself is buy bottles of extra virgin olive, canola, flaxseed, and borage/evening primrose - then combined them all in an equal ratio in one bottle, and put that in my shakes. Cheaper than Udo's in the long run. You might want to do some research before you do that. For instance Udo Erasmus does not recommend flax or borage and he is recognized as one of the world's leading experts on oil. . PS. For an indepth report on oils, read this month's MM. Guest guest
Storing oils in a freezer is a good idea. However my Extra Virgin Olive Oil froze and that was just in the fridge! .
Guest guest
Jon, Glenda posted a great FAQ on flaxseed oil. To view it go to bodyforlife/message/21697 If that link doesn't work, you can go the group website at bodyforlife and search for the phrase " flaxseed " or go directly to message #21697. Guest guest
" To Flax or Not to Flax " " Flaxseed oil's star status among the constellation of highly publicized dietary supplements is owed to recent discoveries of the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids. . . . There are, however, drawbacks to flaxseed oil, as well. " For one, the chemical structure of flaxseed oil, a 'superunsaturated' fat, renders it exceptionally susceptible to oxidation. . . . Light, heat, and air can each ruin flaxseed oil . . .. . To counter the oxidation problem, keep your flaxseed oil refrigerated when you are not using it, buy smaller containers so you can finish it sooner after opening it, and never cook with it. " Another problem with flaxseed oil is that it contains alpha- linolenic acid (ALA), which must be converted to EPA/DHA in the body. .. . . In addition, the vast majority of studies demonstrating the benefits of omega 3 fat use EPA and DHA, not alpha-linolenic acid (remember, too, the heart-healthy Eskimos consume fish, not flaxseed oil). " Furthermore, Dr. Barry Sears cautioned in _The Zone_ of an adverse impact of ALA on eicosanoid synthesis by means of inhibiting the delta 6 desaturase enzyme . . . . " I believe that the importance of consuming a substantial amount of omega 3 fat outweighs the negatives of flaxseed oil, especially given that the delta-6-inhibitory problem . . . can be readily circumvented by supplementing GLA. Evening primrose oil and borage seed oil are good sources of GLA. . . . " . . . One way or another, omega 3 fat is too beneficial to do without. I'll go even further in stating that the average American is so omega-3-deficient that regular fish consumption *and* regular consumption of flaxseed oil is not a bad idea. Guest guest
It's not a bad idea to store oils in your freezer, either; they keep waaaaaay longer. Udo's, for example, can be stored for up to a *year* in the freezer, but only *6 weeks* in the refrigerator. > > Jon, > > > > Glenda posted a great FAQ on flaxseed oil. Guest guest
I did not know that! I bought a huge bottle of flaxseed oil about a week ago (thinking that my sister and I would be sharing it, only she hasn't used any yet). I think I will definitely store it in the freezer instead of the fridge. Thanks for the tip Andy. Jen B. > It's not a bad idea to store oils in your freezer, either; they keep > waaaaaay longer. Guest guest
I got down to the last 1/5 of my bottle of flaxseed oil and noticed some cloudy, semi-solid stuff floating near the bottom. Is this a semi-solidification from refrigeration, or a " mother, " or what? Should I worry about it? ~ Carma ~
