Guest guest
Yesterday my husband and I took (9 years old) to a pediatric neurologist. She was very helpful. She called for an MRI to rule out any tumors or other things. But after she gets the MRI results, which probably won't show anything, she wants to start on a relative of Imipramine called Nortriptyline. I told her that the patient in Colorado tried a drug similar to Nortriptyline and it didn't work, but Imipramine did. However, apparently Nortriptyline has much fewer side effects so she wants to try it first. She feels that SSS might be caused by the same thing that causes sensitivity to sounds when a person is having a migraine. Not that SSS sufferers are having constant migraines, but that the brain is just hyped up and misfiring like during migraines. She feels that the Nortiptyline might " reset " the brain and calm it down. I will let you know what happens. probably won't start taking this for a month or so. I'm just happy to finally have a doctor who wants to figure this out (besides Marsha, of course). I have been discouraged for so long with doctors. My advice to everyone is to go straight to a neurologist. They are the only ones who seem to have any theories or belief that it is possibly neurological. Most doctors we saw pointed me to psychiatrists. Also, if you are the parent of a sufferer, take your husband with you to appointments if possible. It's sad but true, men just seem to give you some credibility and they get more respect. Many doctors look at mothers as hysterical, or overreactors. When my husband came, I got taken way more seriously. Good Luck!! Kathy Howe
