Guest guest
We're scheduled to have Logan's first cast put on a week from tomorrow. I've been reading posts here regarding " flossing " . If I understand correctly it's a process you use to keep the skin healthier?? Also curious on how to remove the t-shirt?? Is this something the Dr. at Shriner's will give us instruction on before we come home? Is there anything else we should try that will help him adjust to this first cast?? Thank you all for the information and for the loving support. Sherry Mom of Logan (age 5)
Guest guest
Hi Sherry, Flossing is a way to get sand or small particles out of the EDF jacket/cast to prevent skin breakdown. It can also be done as a preventive measure to sluff-off dead skin under the cast, to keep skin healthy…When my daughter wore her casts I would use a pr. of nylons dipped in rubbing alcohol to floss. Naturally, I would make sure the nylons weren’t dripping with alcohol and I would always be sure that there was no skin breakdown under the cast before doing this. The alcohol is good for toughening-up the skin and hygiene. (If you have any concerns at all about skin breakdown under the cast, don’t use alcohol). I would start at the neck hole and pull the nylon through one arm hole, then go back and forth with the nylon. Then to the next arm hole, the chest expansion window, the hole in the back, the bottom of the cast, etc…. Clear as mud? T-shirt removal/replacement is not recommended. If you get to a point where you feel its an issue, please discuss with the surgeon that applied the cast, first….The hospital should give you instructions on cast care and if not, just ask the group. Someone will have an answer for you. Please let us know how it goes, next week! Guest guest
Thank you so much for the information! I really like the sound of the nylon idea and will try that for Logan. I guess the only question I would have regarding that would be how do you know if the skin has any break down so as to not use the alcohol. Since it's under the cast how can you know? Thank you again for being so helpful and I will surely check into the group next week and let you all know how it went. There are several of us from this board going that same day to the Erie Shiner's so that will be such a great comfort!
