Guest guest
Hi Jim, > I found, along with > many others, that Tinidazole is much more tolerable > and seems to work just as well. Good to know that Tinidazole is more tolerable for you. My daughter has taken it before and can probably take it again if she wants it. I think she also took Metronidazole when she got sick in India, six months before onset. > One has to start pulses slowly, just one > dose, every three weeks, then two, etc up to a full > five day pulse. I like this idea and will make sure she sees it. I don't think she pulsed it when she used it before. Sue , Upstate New York
Guest guest
I guess I'm asking exactly what the list means. C. Diff has about a 25% fatality rate, and this is his fourth bout with it since his hospitalization Jan. 2 Have the drugs been proven to cause damage or is it just theoretical like statins where muscle wasting is a side effect in a smallish percentage of the cases? Tygacil says " Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) has been reported with use of nearly all antibacterial agents, including TYGACIL, and may range in severity from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis . " Since that's the infection he has, that won't work, Re Rocephinsays (Note: most strains of _Clostridium difficile_ (http://www.rxlist.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=2760) are resistant)
Guest guest
Hi Elinor, Here is a link to an article that discusses why this medication (and others) are on the caution list. http://www.charcot-marie-tooth.org/PDF/NeuroMeds.pdf In the case of Metronidazole, they examined the records of 13 CMT patients who were given this medication. Of the 13, there were 3 patients who reported worsening CMT symptoms. The article goes on to say: " The antibiotics metronidazole and nitrofurantoin are suspected in neuropathy worsening in several cases. Both drugs are well-established causes of toxic neuropathy but in a small minority of patients. Alternative antibiotics are available for most indication for these drugs, but not all. Metronidazole is the agent of choice in some instances and should be used with caution and in limited duration. " Hope that helps.
