Guest guest
Hi, Just FYI I thought you might be interested in info on how Probenecid works. From the PDR: BENEMID (brand name Probenecid) is a uricosuric and renal tubular blocking agent. It inhibits the [renal] tubular reabsorption of urate, thus increasing the urinary excretion of uric acid and decreasing serum urate levels. Effective uricosuria reduces the miscible urate pool, retards urate deposition and promotes resorption of urate deposits. BENEMID inhibits the tubular secretion of penicilllin and usually increases penicillin plasma levels by any routs the antibiotic is given. A 2-fold to 4-fold elevation has been demonstrated for various penicillins. BENEMID also has been reported to inhibit the renal transport of many other compounds including aminohippuric acid (PAH), aminosalicylic acid (PAS), indomethicin, ...... [urate/uric acid deposits in joints are the source of pain and tissue damage in gout.] Jerry ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Probenecid slows the metabolism of some drugs. Here's a good site for an explanation: http://www.cai.mcgill.ca/meded/drugdb/probenecid/probenecid_db.htm It's given for convenience (and to save money when it's mixed with exspensive AIDS drugs) It's used with some drugs so the patient can extend the time between doses - but this stuff has to be metabolised too- and I don't like to take drugs I don't absolutely need to. Amoxy has a very short half life (like an hour or so in young people- double that in older people)- so when I was on Amoxy- just took it often enough. Guest guest
Thanks for the link. I think your idea of just taking the Amoxy more often might be best, since the second sentence of this article states: " Probenecid is not effective for acute attacks of gout and actually can aggravate inflammation if administered during the initial stages. " Inflammation does not sound like a good idea! Although maybe it's only applicable to gout. I dunno. Possible " increase in gastointestinal adverse reactions " doesn't sound like something we need either. - Kate On Tuesday, November 1, 2005, at 09:20 AM, Barb Peck wrote: > Probenecid slows the metabolism of some drugs. > Here's a good site for an explanation: > > http://www.cai.mcgill.ca/meded/drugdb/probenecid/probenecid_db.htm > > It's given for convenience (and to save money when it's mixed with > exspensive AIDS drugs) > > It's used with some drugs so the patient can extend the time between > doses - but this stuff has to be metabolised too- and I don't like to > take drugs I don't absolutely need to. > Amoxy has a very short half life (like an hour or so in young people- > double that in older people)- so when I was on Amoxy- just took it > often enough. > > Barb
Guest guest
Exactly. I'm taking it every 8 hours but who knows maybe one should take more often. Still I think peaks and troughs are good and I'm going to pulse it too. Because any organism that gets used to something develops resistance. You have to surprise it. Rotating abx and herbs and so on should be wise. > > > > > > > I have those refs just asking around.
