I know what you mean, its incredible how loud some noises are. I can't sleep if the TV in the bedroom is off but plugged in with the power on. I am very sensitive to the hum of some lights too and had to ban a new aquarium my husband and the kids brought home as the low hum made me feel sick, though they couldn't hear anything.

We were in a waiting room yesterday and my daughter said that the soft humming of a motor in the ceiling (probably the air conditioner) was loud and sort of hurting her ear. It is amazing the sounds she hears. She can hear the blinking of my eyes, the touching of a face, I could go on and on. I think 4s sufferers don't only respond to certain noises in an unusual way, but they also hear certain frequencies more intensely than "normal" people.

-----Original Message-----From: Soundsensitivity [mailto:Soundsensitivity ]On Behalf Of Sent: Wednesday, March 12, 2008 5:30 PMTo: Soundsensitivity Subject: Loud noise last night

I was getting ready for bed last night when I noticed a noise. I thought it was a fan or water running but I was in a room that does not have these noises. I'm looking around and finally find the culprit. A DVD player is running with the tv off. I can't beleive how loud it sounded to me. My kids leave the thing running all the time but it's never sounded loud to me before. Not a 4s trigger really, just another example of how a soft sound can sound just as loud as a medium sound to me. I was shocked at what was causing it.

I have to agree with you on your last sentence. I can

hear noises no else can and it is so annoying because

sometimes I can't even hear someone who is talking

right next to me in a low voice....but have some motor

running from a fan three rooms away from me that no

one else can hear and I will pick up on it...I used to

have a cell phone that if I plugged the charger in the

outlet without the phone attached it would let off a

high pitched solid beep noise that no one else can

hear or pick up on and I know it comes from the

charger because I soon as I unplug it the sound is

gone...same thing with my boyfriends celing

fan/light...if he had it dimmed therre was a whining

noise that he couldn't hear, but I could always pick

up on it.....

heartbeat? Oh my God! I can't believe it. I also hear my own

heartbeat and it drives me mad. I also " hear " the pulse in my ears

when I lay my head sideways on the pillow at night. I can hear the

sound of my own eyelashes hitting the pillow, too, if I have my eyes

open and am blinking naturally. But that's an easy fix, I just close

my eyes. There's nothing I can do about my own heartbeat. That one

makes me crazy, as I cannot always sleep on my back and laying my

head sideways increases the sound tremendously.

Yes, I can hear a dog whistle, but it doesn't bother me. I guess it

might if I had to hear it repetitively. Again, it is always the

repetition of something that makes me the craziest, but sometimes

even just one sound done once or twice can drive me mad. Often I

think it's the fear that it will go on forever that makes me

frustrated though. If its something that I know will not last long,

I get calmer when I tell myself it will only be another 10 minutes or

so (usually helps). But when it's a sound that I know could continue

indefinitely, I MUST remove myself from the situation.

I really thought I was delving into insanity when I started hearing my heart beat. Partly too, I thought it was something outside of me and then I realized/decided that it was my heart. Thank goodness it doesn't happen all of the time. I'm sorry to hear that it can be such a problem. I think Edgar Poe must have had 4s (Tell Tale Heart).

, this is also true for me: "Again, it is always the repetition of something that makes me the craziest, but sometimes even just one sound done once or twice can drive me mad. One dog bark and I'm immediately crazy, because it's so uncontrollable and can go on for a long time, so I get anxious that it will. Same with sniffling, throat clearing and such. If it's annoying but it's pretty likely that will end, like the rumbling of a garbage truck, then I can handle it. But my neighbor's truck

rumble bugs me more because it happens more often. So I'm right there with you--I'm the same way.

Yes, it's constantly running and repetitive type sounds. They can be environmental or natural. I think this really should be included in the description of 4's. My toleration time is practically nil. Half a second and I'm through the roof. This is what is really hard to explain to people. I cannot tolerate certain sounds at all.
