Hi-- well, I would want to know what they suggest doing in terms of daily maintenance-- and ask about what is the "least invasive" and start there, i.e. start with some dietary changes to try and get more fiber/fruit into him... find an over the counter product that you can mix into his beverages every day, such as benefiber or the other one in the blue canister that I can't remember--fiber sure, I think. If he was going well on the miralax for two weeks, then you might even try ordering the Juice with Fibre product. it is expensive, but it has TEN grams per box and that, along with increased liquid intake, may be enough to keep him going regularly. Then, if these things don't work, then what would they suggest as the next level to try? There's LOTS of options here on this board in terms of what parents are using, so read through old messages, look at the files, and so forth.

Ultimately treatment for constipation needs to address: -- gut health (like you mentioned, parasites, but also good/bad bacteria levels--need to have a lot of good bacteria in the gut like lactobacillus, bifidus, etc.) -- a source of fiber, whether from foods or supplemental. Thankfully there are more choices on the market now that mix in easily with drinks and are relatively flavorless. -- increased liquid intake, along with the fiber -- regular 'practice', i.e. sitting on the toilet at a regular time per day, to ultimately help the body get used to relaxing and having a movement. To help gut health, it can mean taking supplemental "probiotics" to supply the good bacteria to the gut, or other types of supplements. Magnesium, or a calcium/magnesium supplement can also help. I would also ask if they could do any

sort of stool analysis testing to check for parasites, and good and bad bacteria levels, and yeast. The "pasty" description to me, does sound like there may be a problem with a specific type of bacteria and/or yeast. It could also be dietary though--is he eating a lot of starchy foods? at taht time. He had meds and that was cleared up. The parasite had made him have the worst smelling poops and loosest in the world. Now, probably 8-10 months ago, he's not been going regularly. He will be 4 in january and is not potty trained for #2. At one point perhaps he was constipated and it "hurt" and maybe in his mind he "wasn't going to go again". For this long now it seems like he will hold it in. I'd been to our ped twice about it. He said, "as long as it's not hard, he's fine." Um...well, he will wait 5 days sometimes, go tiny little pasty bits each day up to 8 times. THis is NOT normal. The ped. had him on Miralax for 2 weeks back in Oct. After that 2 wks he's right back to where he started. So, this Thurs. we're going to a GI specialist to see what's up. Does anyone have any input on what exactly to ask the specialist? I'm gfoing to have a list of thigns to tell him. Thanks much for any

input.J>H>

Is his stomach area always bloated? The several pasty movements a day sounds possible he is having back up and maybe motility issues, not neccessarily holding! Sometimes I am a little concerned when a holding diagnoses is there. My son who had an allergic reaction to vacs(this started all his gi issues to begin with) could be thought to be holding, even when his stool is not hard, but he is not holding. It is possible he(my son) has some muscle/nerve damage issues(vac caused) going on and just doesnt have the mobility he should. His gastro suggested that his stool just sits in his upper intestines. Our son's stools have to be looser than the norm to be able to move. Are you saying that even on miralax he had trouble or are you saying he was fine on miralax, not on now and having trouble? If he was good on miralax this would tell me he is not holding! It is good that you are going to specialists. Be sure and ask if they have nutritionists that

can help with his diet and things that can help with that route. Jennie wrote: Hi. I'm new to this and want input please. went to gi spec last thurs. he has an enlarged rectum, which of

course, can heal. so, we just finisehd the " clean out " phase (high

doses of senokot, otc laxative). Now we're starting the miralax for

months til he heals and his brain realizes it won't hurt to go potty!

(he 'll be 4 in a

month)

It just makes me mad that our ped. jst was like " he's fine, he's

fine. " for 10 months!

The other hard thing is to get our son to drink 6-8 oz with the meds

in it at one time. He has never been a big drinker, which I'm sure is

one strong cause of all these problems !
