Guest guest
With my son, every single time I took him to his pediatrician for an illness or well-child checkup, I would tell her that he wouldn't sleep through the night (he's 3 1/2 now) and every single time she would give me the name of another book to read on how to get your child to fall asleep and stay asleep. I think it would be good if pedi's saw this as a possible sign of autism and not "over-mothering" and maybe some children (like our son) would get evaluated sooner. It gives validity to the fact that our children do not sleep like typically developing children. I could get up with my neuro typical daughter, change her and put her right back down when my son with autism, my first child, would be awake for two hours after the event. When I would tell this to doctors, friends or parents, I was considered an over doting mother. Their suggestions were that I should have left my son to "cry himslef back to sleep". This might actually help educate the public, and teach others not to ridicule parents of children with autism, just patiently listen since we are on limited sleep.
