Happy New Year to all of you!!!

It is wet and cold down here but lucky not to have snow.

I hope you can share w/ me any info regarding the 2 questions below:

1. What is your policy for patients who are on a waitlist for a pancreas

transplant(#1) who becomes incarcerated while being on a waitlist? Do you

put them on hold or drop them from the list? (While in prison they lose

their insurance)

2. We have a patient here who has an individual plan at the time he got

listed for kidney transplant. He has no Mcare because he is not yet on

dialysis. When he received his transplant, he applied for Mcare and Mcare

benefits became effective the month of the transplant. Which one is the

primary, the individual plan or Mcare?

Thanks.

(While in prison they losetheir insurance)[(Aguiar, )] Can't help you w/this one-I've only had post-tx pt's become "guests" of the state! :-) I can tell you that here in MA, the system that has custody of the pt is responsible for their medical charges incurred, which have always included the immunos, clinic visits, & any other services they require as part of their care. 2. [(Aguiar, )] If by individual, you mean a plan he purchased himself, this would make Medicare prime from the date it becomes effective since he doesn't have any EGHP or LGHP coverage.

Hey Rea - isn't it true that in Texas prisoners get the electric chair

anyway - so why waste the pancreas? I hope you all take that in jest.

Seriously, we have not had this situation occur. Like said, we

have only had post tx patients in prison. I do know that you can't deny

a prisoner healthcare, but if he/she has no coverage, then you wouldn't

have him/her listed anyway, right? I'm sure it would depend upon how

long the patient will be incarcerated (?) and will insurance benefits be

re-instated? Sorry, no real experience here.

, we do not transplant patients who are in prison but when they get out

of jail, their medical problem is the same. This patient got listed while

working and had insurance. When he got into the jail system , he lost his

insurance. Sure the inmates are provided for a health care but not

transplant. Also, the patient will be released soon.

and , thank you for your response.
