Hi Barbara

It could be just that he is trying to be controlling but it sounds

like e is hypersensitive to some kinds of movement - especially

vertical - and has a fear of his feet leaving the ground. This might

be because his core stability is poor or any other number of sensory

integration issues. These can change and attenuate or aggravate as a

child grows. Does he have the same reaction to trampolines, swings,

roundabouts, see-saws? How about being swung or carried? Sometimes

it is the effect of gravity and how he reacts. Is he climbing up or

being carried? Can you carry him another way? How about facing

backwards or bottom-shuffling up backwards very slowly? Can you try

putting a favourite food/toy/treat half way up the stairs and see if

he will crawl up slowly and really reward him for his efforts?

If you are going to the Handle Course you will find this great but if

you have noticed this and other issues on the sensory front -

especially a desire for bland foods which don't need chewing or

runching, I would think he has some very big sensory issues. You would

need to do a sensory integration assessment to find out which ones and

then home exercises/SI sessions. Jane Horwood in borough is great

-don't know of anyone down your way. 'The Out of Synch Child'by

Carol Stock Kranowitz and the' Out of Synch CHild has Fun'are great

books but you'd need to run by an SI first before launching into this.

I agree with Rhona. It could also be a visual problem - difficulty in

judging depth of visual field and so stairs would be frightening.
