My son-in-law is a paramedic and attended, relaying to me the jist of the discussion, one sided that it was. No one in the class knew anything about Chiari, therefore the doctor was at liberty to give his estimation of the condition as a situation with not much more signifigance than the common cold. He stated that Chiari surgery--surgeries that he has performed--is done on an outpatient basis!!! That patients who needed decompression surgery were in for a relatively simple procedure which, obviously according to him, involved the same risks of having your tonsils removed. I was furious that this man gave to our community the idea that ACM is a common disorder and having surgery for it is nothing to warrant any special precautions or concerns. He even stated that there was absolutely no reason whatsoever for patients to travel to have this surgery when it can be safely performed right here by himself or his partner-- one of them. Funny that when my NS diagnosed me, he recommended neither of his two partners (the doctor who gave the speech is a partner). My NS no longer performs brain surgery due to the huge malpractice premiums associated with brains. > My local neurologist has several Chiari patients who have been decompressed--most of them locally--and have not done well. Imagine that!!! > > In any event, I am going to try and find out if there is a transcript of the class, or at least minutes I can obtain before making any action. I would like to at least " educate " this poor misguided doctor bozo about the serious consequences which can occur with this " simple " brain surgery. I know it might be impossible for him to learn anything from a " non-medical " underling, but one feels the need to try and enlighten the public after such grossly inacurate information. > If any of you have any suggestions or comments I would love to hear them. I know I can send him Dr. M's paper as well as some personal experiences (anonymous of course) to let him know it is not as simple as he is claiming. > I could surely use your help in this effort. > Thanks > Debby in TX > > > >
