Guest guest
Hi Kathy-- can she swallow a capsule/tablet? If so, buy a small container of the Benefiber TABLETS. This is something that helps Elora more so than the powdered Benefiber, I think in part that it contains silica as one of the ingredients, which helps make things a bit slick, but also, I think the capsule takes longer to dissolve in the digestive system and so it may just "stay around" longer to help make the bulk of her stool softer. If your dd can swallow it, and it is kind of a big tablet unfortunately, it might be worth trying one of them twice a day--once in the a.m., and one in the p.m. and see if it allows you to lessen the miralax a little bit. Guest guest
Forgot to mention -- I think the capsules of Soloray Cal-Mag citrate are pretty good -- they are a 1-1 ratio. It depends on where you are in the healing process -- you may need a 3-1 cal-mag ratio or a 1-3 -- or anything in between. This is my challenge too! > > > > Been using Kirkman's Magnesium Citrate powder for awhile. > > Are there any other powders out there that you all like and are > > more effective? Guest guest
Yes -- but read these posts for more info. Yeast was an issue too. I am planning on posting a systematic checklist for what works -- but probably won't have time until after tax season. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/miralax/message/2152 2 other products that I didn't mention in the above posts was Kidlax http://www.luckyvitamin.com/631257310903.html and Zand fiber http://www.luckyvitamin.com/041954020775.html They are helpful especially when fine tuning (the magnesium level) and when I'm changing supplements and he doesn't have a BM one day I add one Kidlax or 2 Zand capsules now to make sure things keep moving. These are far superior to Benefiber, I believe. I am so positive that Miralax is toxic that I keep visiting this group from time to time tell our story. Thanks for starting it . > > > > Been using Kirkman's Magnesium Citrate powder for awhile. > > Are there any other powders out there that you all like and are > > more effective? Guest guest
Hi -- I think in our Files section on the board, or maybe it is the Links section, there might be one or two on the Juice Plus Fibre. Try doing a google search on it, spelled just like that, and you'll see a number of vendors. Shipping varies across the US so if you find one close to where you live, it may be a better deal. I don't know if she would be able to do the benefiber tablet mixed in with food... not sure... it is three fourths of an inch long. W Hudson wrote: Thanks for hanging in with me !! Guest guest
Yes, the Zand fiber has different 'stuff' than the Benefiber... I think my dd is allergic to psylium husk though--every time I've tried something with it, she has hives. :-( And you're welcome for starting the board! I'm glad that it has become a supportive place for parents to find out different ways of dealing with constipation. W mommtlc wrote: Yes -- but read these posts for more info. Yeast was an issue too. Guest guest
Thank you to both posts for the update! We also only use mag citrate occaisionally, infact any form of magnesium at that, usually as needed(typically more for seizure control), not daily(we do make sure to get in at least a couple of days a week if he seems it needs it(this has gotten his grand mals under control). Our 1st gastro had mentioned not to overdo the citrate form because it can be to acidic! Maybe this is some of the discomfort/irratibility mentioned?! On rare occaision if he had very severe backup, gastro ok'd on citrate cleanout(he said not more than about every 3months, if that). Havent needed the citrate cleanout since aloe dosage was figured out for backup and much easier to get in him! We found that aloe vera juice works the best (we do not do this daily either, only if needed). Our new gastro also mentioned that miralax can cause bloating/discomfort. Our 1st gastro(for 2yrs) never admitted to this. Yes, every child is different, but it is great we can all share our experiences and try to figure this all out together! Jennie wrote: Thank you for the info!I have recently read at another group that mag citrate can causehyperactivity and other issues in some kids. I have started to worryabout my 3 year old (not autistic, but chronic constipation issues)because I was finally able to get him to accept mag citrate instead ofMOM but after a few weeks, I started to feel he was increasinglyirritable and more prone to frustration/tantrums. I switched back toMOM, trying the original (mag hydroxide, water, and sodiumhyperchlorite) instead of the cherry flavor which has a bunch of otheringredients/chemicals. It's tasteless (to me) and I can mix it inwith juice in small increments and he seems to not notice. I havefelt that his irritability has already decreased in just a few days.I have also added aloe vera juice and that has allowed a lower dose ofMOM. Still doing Epsom salt baths too. (and probiotics and CLO)It does seem like many people have good success with mag citrate so I,too, am not trying to convince people not to use, just wanted to sharewhat I've seen in my son since trying mag citrate. Guest guest
Thanks for that. I do believe the reason why he wanted her off mag- citrate is because laculose, works abotu the same as Miralax does, and that is to " irritate " the intestines so they will have a BM. I've also read that laculose does cause a heck of alot of bloating and gas. So glad my son isn't on it. So, yep i could definately see how the mag-citrate which is a saline osmotic would irriate the already irriatate intestines more. But Mag-sulfat, mag-hydroide (the stuff that is in MOM) and mag-citrate are all saline osomitic's just with a different added agent to make absorbtion easier. Mag- sulfate is the one that is given to ppl in preperation for colonoscopies to help cleanse the colon completely, and i've read that it is the most absorbed then the others. Here's a link that was put up a few days ago here that tells you a wealth of great knowledge about Laxatives. HTH http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laxative I soo hope your little one feels better! > > Hi all, > We just came back from Roanoke, Va. and saw Dr. Hart.
