The study was conducted by Dr. Joe A. Vinson, from the University of

Scranton in Pennsylvania and presented yesterday at the 230th national

meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest

scientific society.

Vinson previously did a study which concluded that the antioxidant

activity of lager beer (especially dark) is higher than that of green

tea, red wine, or grape juice. I think his department has also been

involved in green tea/antioxidant research.

I read one news article covering several medical stories, that stated

the research was funded by the cocoa bean industry, however I only

found that one news reference which led to a different study showing

that chocolate is beneficial in reducing cholesterol and halving both

atherosclerosis and cataracts (which was not conducted by Vinson).

The paper was just presented, but a search at pubmed shows quite a few

studies on antioxidants and coffee.

This must have been the most exciting thing to come out of the ACS

conference, or at least the most exciting thing that the reporters

could understand. :-)

Yes, Nelly, that's what it actually said. The study wasn't just

looking at antioxidant content but levels of consumption, and the

near total absence of antioxidants in the rest of our diets made

coffee an easy winner by default.

Since we're being party poopers, we might as well also point out

that the antioxidant levels in decaf and regular were found to be

identical.

> What I understand this study is saying is: American have such

lousy diets that they get more anti-oxidants they get is from their

cups of coffee than from anything else in their diets, IMO it

doesn't really tell me to rush into drinking 10 cups of coffe per

day. Their are other (better?) ways of getting one's anti-oxidants,

but it's kind of a bit reassuring for people who don't eat

vegetables but who drink coffee.

I don't know, a diet of beer, red wine, chocolate and coffee sounds

pretty good to me.

I'm sick of people preaching about what's nutritionally healthy and

what's not when it changes every day anyway. Soy is good. Soy is bad.

Chocolates' bad, chocolate's good. Fat's bad, fat's good. Dairy's

good, dairy's bad. Wheat's good, wheat's bad.

Carbs are good, carbs are bad, carbs are good...

People should just stop preaching and practice moderation.

I hear ya. I actually quit coffee for 7 years. Actually, I quit

caffeine. But then, when I was at a really low point energy wise,

maybe a year or so ago, I had a cup of the real stuff, and that was

it, back on the joe. :-) I only do one large cup a day though, not

like the old days, before I knew I was actually ill, when I was

drinking a pot a day just to stay functional. BAck then, that much

coffee DID give me palps, and insomnia, and didn't help the IBS

either. But recently, that one cup a day really helped give me a

boost, and now that I'm so much better, I'm just enjoying it.

also sent me a bunch of studies showing caffeine's anti-inflammatory

properties, so I'm no longer feeling guilty about my coffee

consumption. And also enjoying the fact that all those people who've

been giving me such a hard time about coffee, are now going to have

to possibly eat their words. :-)

p.s. If anyone needs a technique for switching to decaf, I've got a

great, easy method. :-)

> I agree, Penny. Also think what is good for one person is not good

for others just like antibiotics. I know which food affect me

adversely so it is my fault if I eat them. I didn't mean to make

light of the study-I was in some kind of a mood and like you after a

while don't know what to believe. I did realize when I read it that

it was also linked to consumption. Holistic Drs have been telling

me forever that coffee is bad and most of the FM diets list is as a

no no. With that in mind I quit coffee (again) and went to tea. I

quit the coffee because it was making causing tachacardia. Also

because a Doc told me to quit it cause I have fibrocystic breasts.

The tachacardia settled down with adjustments in asthma meds and

thyroid meds. About a week ago I had a cup of coffee and realized it

made me feel more alert. So I have added coffee back into my diet

but limiting to 1cup (mug) in the morning. Also I wait for a couple

of hours after I have taken my morning thyroid med.I heard a Dr.

> speak on CFS some time ago. In the q & a part of the lecture

someone asked about coffee. She said that some studies show that one

cup (I think is was 250mg) is found to make the brain more alert but

that is the threshold and it doesn't benefit much after that.
