Guest guest
I saw this product in the HFS today. Does it working for calming and constipation? It was kind of expensive so was wondering what you thought of it. Thanks, Kathy H. magnesium citrate Well, I found a product at our health food store which contained Mag citrate. It is called Gillham's Natural Vitality, Natural Calm. It's a powder you stir into fluid. Then, Dr. Cave, biomedical specialist, recommebnded gel tabs. She told me to have our son take 2 a day (150 mg each). These are made by Klaire Labs. I believe www.kirkmanlabs.com sells them. All of Kirkmans supplements are free of all allergens (wheat, soy, eggs, gluten, additives, etc.) They also have some info about magnesium in its various forms. Also, I had read that diabetics or prediabetics are low in magnesium as it helps transport insulin. The magnesium citrate is the liquid or pill/capsule? I assume you use it asmaintenance.I use magnesium citrate in liquid (buy from longs drug in bottle) to toclean out if my son is really constipated. It is a clean out medicine, notmaintenance medecine.Thanks.Wenwei---[This E-mail was scanned for viruses by Declude/F-Prot Virus]
Guest guest
We just started using the Calm magnesium citrate. I have to say it is very effective in relieving my daughter's constipation. We haven't found it to be calming yet, but just the constipation relief alone is worth it's weight. I would recommend it. Guest guest
The "calm" that I purchased was only magnesium citrate. I know you can get it with calcium as well. I give her some calcium citrate separately (we already had a big bottle of it, so I didn't think it was necessary to give additional) I try to control it so that the calcium doesn't make her more constipated. It's tough trying to find the happy medium:) Sincerely, Johansonhttp://www.personalizedpiggybanks.com/Homespun Creations
Guest guest
I do not know that actual ratio. I would imagine the combo that you have would probably be accurate for the average person. Guest guest
I noticed this also has calcium in it. Do you give additional calcium as well? Thanks, Kathy H. Guest guest
Thanks, so calcium is constipating? Do you know the ration of calcium to magnesium? thanks, Kathy Re: magnesium citrate The "calm" that I purchased was only magnesium citrate. I know you can get it with calcium as well. Guest guest
Kathy, some people say that about calcium but I don't think that is a general fits-all rule. I think what happens for some people is that if they are already low in magnesium, then the intake of calcium can make their magnesium drop even more. I can't explain it but there is some relationship between the two... and they each need each other... and so if someone found calcium constipating, they should probably try getting some more magnesium. The natural calm product, the one that has both calcium and magnesium, does so for the reason that in order to utilize magnesium well, the body does need some calcium, and vice versa... I don't know what is the ideal ratio, but you can google natural calm and you'll end up finding a site that explains it more. I've read it in the past but don't have it handy. Guest guest
Thanks , I'm going to purchase some of that and try it. The Oxypowder did nothing for her but upset her stomach. Guest guest
Generally speaking the ration should be 2:1, that is 2 parts Calcium for 1 part Magnesium. There are also various forms of Magnesium. For example Mag.Oxide is constipating while Mag.Citrate has laxative effect. Here is an explanation from Kirkman's catalog: Oxide tends to firm stools; Glycinate is a very gentle form, easier on the system; Citrate, Sulfate and Chloride tend to loosen stools. Hope this helps, Stefan > > Thanks, so calcium is constipating? > Do you know the ration of calcium to magnesium? > thanks, > Kathy >
Guest guest
Hi Stefan-- actually, I don't think mag oxide is constipating... I can take it and have to rush to the bathroom, so can dh, and Oxypowder contains mag oxide and it's function is to help empty out, not back up... so I think when kirkman's says it tends to produce firmer stools I don't think they mean that it is constipating. Everyone is different though and should just try different forms if they are not having any luck with one particular kind. :-) Wvsvskolevi wrote: Generally speaking the ration should be 2:1, that is 2 parts Calcium for 1 part Magnesium. Guest guest
Kathyrn, Where did you read 'diabetics and prediabetics are low in magnesium'? My 41/2 year old son is diabetic and has constipation issues. We recently went to a naturopath who recommended the Nature Calm Magnesium. Just curious since I've always wondered if there was a link. Thanks, Liz > > > Date: 2006/02/04 Sat PM 08:38:20 EST > To: <miralax > > Subject: Re: magnesium citrate > > I saw this product in the HFS today. Guest guest
Hi--I'm not kathryn, but just wanted to say that on pubmed.com there are articles talking about low magnesium and diabetes. The natural calm is being used by several families on this list and it has made a difference for them. Guest guest
I found Magnesium Citrate Oral Solution, next to the fleet enemas and fiber powder shelves. a couple dollars a big bottle. I remember taking this stuff when I had to be squeaky clean for a procedure, I had to drink 2 of these bottles and stay by the bathroom for hours... It really worked. We got the Berry flavor and I measure it into a miralax cup and he drinks it down straight and drinks the rinse water too. I tried it, tastes a bit sour and slightly fizzy, like a sour candy. Carlin was on day 5 of no poop, even with 2 17gram doses of Miralax a day (plus all the other stuff), well, the magnesium citrate couldn't hurt. Started with 1 teaspoon on Wednesday and tapered the two together. On Friday he took 2t MC and 1 1/2x17gr M and produced a huge poop in the potty! Saturday Carlin took 4t MC and 17gr M. and had a wonderfully shitty day. we are talking 4 huge toilet clogger sessions plus a large amount in a diaper and some spotting. I would love to have a scale to weigh him, cause Jimminy that was a lot! there was some crying, but I'm not sure if it was cramping or withholding. Once he relaxed, it all came out oatmeal soft. he hasn't been eating much, but last night ate his entire taco supper and asked for seconds and thirds on water. even ate a 2T of mashed cauliflower for the first time. Daycare is pushing us toward potty training so they can move him up to a more challenging classroom. So we gave cloth underwear with rubber pants, a good go yesterday. 8 wet and 2 BM spotting in underwear. No pee but 4 BM's +spotting in the toilet. back to diapers after supper with one more large BM. We will give it another good go today, but I'm pretty convinced he isn't getting the right signals. I'll go down to 2T of MC and 3/4 M and set the timer for 30 minute intervals. He is in the 3 & 4's playroom. Once potty trained reliably he will move up with the 4 & 5's Pre-K room, skipping the 4's preschool room. He is doing Kindergarten and first grade work at home when he wants to. might be on the gifted spectrum. Wow, long winded. heading downstairs to get morning coffee... Love and Light, na Carlin: 4Years2Months otherwise normally healthy, prone to dehydration and pneumonia. possibility of a seizure disorder with 2-3 very minor episodes this year. Rx'd 17gr Miralax 6 months ago by Encoporesis Clinic at Bridge Children's Hospital. 1-2 fiber+calcium tablets, 1 probiotic, 1 multivitamin, no milk, rarely cheese, whole grain breads etc. Has been Impacted twice since then and still averages 3-4 days between BM's. his behavior is affected, whiny/aggressive/bossy/quick to anger. ready to try most anything to get 'my boy' back. Guest guest
Another Washingtonian! You are on the right track. It's not an easy process -- but it's worth it. Any +/- behavior changes yet? Might add epsom salt w/ baking soda baths -- they can't hurt. Bulk bags at costco. Several cups each depending on size of tub. PS -- Even though my son wasn't " on the spectrum " -- I found a lot of information from googling -- autism GI constipation, etc. There are several active bio-med groups for WA -- I learned a lot from them. Email me for more info. > > I found Magnesium Citrate Oral Solution, next to the fleet enemas and fiber > powder shelves. a couple dollars a big bottle.
