Guest guest
Hi Jennie--I can't remember what deficiency eating paper signals...but it is definitely linked to something. If I come across that info again, I will post. In the meantime, you are right to keep him away from the paper because some inks contain mercury, others contain other heavy metals. It's just so bad for him. When kids get sick, several things can be reasons for constipation...one is that they aren't drinking as much fluid, or, that because of their illness their body is using the fluid that they are taking in, in other ways, so not as much of it stays in the stool. When the immune system changes, either is suppressed or 'fired up' then that can change what goes on in the colon in terms of bacteria and yeast levels. If getting mag citrate is too difficult then I would go ahead and try the mag sulfate (epsom salt) however, it may not taste all that great. But go ahead and see if he will drink it. I have read that for people who are extremely deficient, sometimes a little mag sulfate tastes sweet to them...could be why Dasani water contains a little mag sulfate--to enhance the flavor of it. Some kids on autism boards, will have loose stools after just taking even a BATH in epsom salt water (one cup per bath--only some of it will be absorbed through the skin, the rest goes down the drain), however, neither of my kids ever had that type of reaction. Will he chew one of the 's 'chocolate chews'? WJennie wrote: can someone tell me the difference between epsom salt mag "saline" and the magnesium citrate "saline"?? I know antibiotics well have an after affect when done of backup, but he hasnt been put on any at this point. Did go after the magazines and wanting to chew on them. I threw them all away, but wonder if this might have been his back up problem. We have been trying to teach him not to chew on books/mags, but this has been quite the trial(he is obseesive with it). Guest guest
Hi ! Thank you!! I recently joined a group to get help with the paper cravings! This has always been an issue with him!! He doesnt eat/swallow it, sometimes I think some does get buy. I suspect your write on the illness and fluid issues, he drinks a lot less when he doesnt feel good, I need to syringe water into him, thank you for this fluid reminder. The mag citrate in the liquid sour form is so hard to get in him and so much is requiered for cleanout(but sure works). This is what I was wondering about the sulfate form for, cleanout, due to possible backup. Do you know if the 1-2 tsps of epsom salt is sufficient in comparisin to the 6 oz's(doc recomend for his cleanouts) of the citrate? Is the epsom salt just a mild laxative, or is it used as cleanout also? I tasted the epsom and it is not as strong as the citrate by far and hope that it works as good. He started this illness around the same time I wanted to start the natural calm(illness not from the natural calm, other kids are ill also) and so Im not sure if the natural calm has any affect on him yet. The first couple of times I used with him was great, then either illness or paper did this recent stuff. So I need to get him a good fresh start and get things moving again with the mag's, citrate or sulfate. And at this point I honestly wonder if him getting a hold of magizines and etc. caused a blockage? Hope the new group well be able to help with this. Coencidently when he isnt feeling that good or gi issues flare up, the paper is really wanted by him, dont know if this is a comfort thing or craving as you mentioned. I gave him 3tsp of natural calm today and am wondering if more would be needed to break up the backup, tried 2tsp day before yesterday(no success), 1tsp befor that. It is a very, very mild measurement compared to the citrate but was hoping little amounts daily would do the same(cleanout). Not so far!! I think Ill try the sulfate tomarrow, if nothing, then go ahead with the dreaded magnesium citrate. Just not sure how much sulfate to try? Box says a couple of tsp, but he needs something for possible block. Jennie wrote: Hi Jennie--I can't remember what deficiency eating paper signals...but it is definitely linked to something. Guest guest
Hi Jennie--somewhere on the internet I have seen a conversion for how many mg's of magnesium is in one teaspoon/tablespoon of epsom salt (mag sulfate), and if I find it I will post. How is he doing now? The thing with the paper, even if he isn't swallowing it, the saliva mixing with the chemicals as they come off the paper is getting into him, unfortunately. W Any questions? Guest guest
Hi ! He is doing much better! We decided to do the mag citrate due to the liquid stool he was having, we realized he was blocked and it was not diarrhea!! The citrate worked! He ended up with high fever, and still a little issues going on with the gi. I tried vitamine C(want to avoid antibiotics if possible, they mess him up everytime), he actually recovered on his own, this used to be so rare for him to do. I believe his immune has been boosted from the aloe juice and occaissional garlic!! Then the C kicked it!! We are on top of the paper thing! Keeping it away from him. I think he has the pica thing and they(support group) suggested it is a lacking mineral issue possibly. I lean more towards habit due to since the magazines arent readily available he has resorted to chewing on plastic lids. I make sure they are without ink on them. Still not crazy about the plastic, but it is helping with the breaking the habit of paper! Also, I wanted to mention on the aloe, the george's form is great(no taste, smell, etc), and does seem to give him relief with reflux etc, it is very suttle. We purchased more whole form(some processing) and what a difference in the stool department, works better than the distilled. When able to get to the city, I am going to get "whole, whole" form. The distilled removes to much needed ingredients. We are going to use the aloe when needed. I also noticed a difference with the natural calm, we did see a calm with him, not sure why. But he was so ill that I truely couldnt see if it had much affect on him as far as the stool. It seems to be a very suttle supplement. Going to start back up again and go from there. He is back on the 1 dose of miralax(not 2 doses). Got to go back to stage one again with the supplements now that he has recovered from illness and go from there and hopefully get rid of the 1dose. I also wanted to mention, I know this is not the group topic, but my son is considered non verbal(7yrs old). He has started some baby babble since his regression from vaccinations. We are proud to announce that he said "boe" "boe". I know this seems silly, but it is the first time he has attempted the "B" sound. He has done this twice!! We find that our family has a joined/joy bond when he does something like this. It is amazing how easy it is to get so side tracked in life with medical stress, teen issues, life in general and the distance/trials that can come between a family and then something so simple as the sound "boe" can reunite a family if even for a few precious minutes. Guest guest
Hi Jennie-- what is the brand of the whole form of aloe that you are using? How does it taste? Do you mix it with juice to hide the flavor? You might try getting a " chewy tube " for him. I'm not crazy about the plastic lids either in that they do contain the chemicals made in the plastic and they'll leach when he chews them because they weren't made to be chewed--you want to get something for him that is meant to not release the chemicals, when chewed or stressed. Lots of speech therapy catalogs sell something called a " chewy tube " --they are usually T-shaped and the child can chew on the longest end. In therapy they are used to help strengthen the jaw muscles but for kids with sensory issues and a high need to chew, they can be used to just " chew on " . That's great that he's starting to have some verbalizations! You can share that news here anytime!!! W > > Hi ! He is doing much better! Guest guest
Jennie- I remember a few kids that were chewing on things obsessively after M. I think it affected their nervous system!m w wrote: Hi Jennie--I can't remember what deficiency eating paper signals...but it is definitely linked to something.
