Hi, my name is and I am obese. I am looking into all support

groups and options that I can find. I am a insulin dependant type 2

diabetic and I have high cholesterol all at the age of 25. I am a

mother of 3 and I want to be around for them. In January of 2006 I

lost my father (at 600 lbs) due to complications of being obese, and

I then made a vow to get healthier and to lose weight, but everything

I try seems to fail, no matter how little I eat, or what I eat or how

much exercise I do, the weight just seems like it won't go away. My

doctors want me to have the lapband done, but I have heard the horror

stories and I am scared, so I figured I would try some support groups

to see if that helps. I have joined OA, which has seemed to help as

long as I attend my meeting, because I have found that I am a

compulsive over-eater, I like to eat instead of dealing with my

emotions. So what I would like to know is how all of you are doing,

and if anything in particularly has helped you.

Thank you,

welcome !

Wow!

We are happy to have you here and I know you will get many different responses as so many of us have different things that work. I have been very active all my life. I did not eat well tho, mostly 4 or 5 hundred calories a day. So I started going to Curves here and went back on a high protein 1600 calorie a day program

I am stuffed a lot but I have lost nearly 40 pounds in the last 9 months. And I feel good. This group has really helped me and Steve is encouraging as he is not afraid to tell of his successes and of his falling down. We all fall short and it helps to know others do too.

Take care and enjoy the responses you get.

Hi , Welcome to the group. This group came into my life when I was really ready to change my lifestyle, and the encouragement and tips have made a huge difference in my life. I think that, first you have to be ready, and second, you have to be thinking about it as a permanent change. It has been really important in my program to, as much as possible, keep temptation out of my life and to have foods that are prepackaged in portion control amounts. You mothers of children have my sympathy because the job entails temptations, first in preparing foods for others that maybe you should not eat, and second in children's need of snacks. I can not help you there as my situation is different, but there are young mothers in this group who I am sure can give you suggestions. I have a son who is insulin dependent, and has had open heart surgery. He is at the best weight of his life right now. I will ask him what works for him and share it with you. They have four kids and, usually, a house full of the kids' friends, so I know there are tons of snack foods around.

One thing I learned on this forum is that you can eat too little. First it puts you into a starvation mode and your metabolism slows down. At first I thought this was untrue, but I have experienced it over and over in the past year. When you keep your calorie input too low for a number of days, you stop losing, then raise it up to just below what it takes to maintain you at your weight, and you will start losing again. if you are very heavy it takes quite a few calories just to maintain you in a sedantary state.

Another thing that works is to eat frequently but small meals. I limit myself to 350 calories for each of three meals, and eat the rest in 100 calorie snacks throughout the day and evening. You can get all kinds of snacks now in 100 calorie portions, and/or make yourself a list of same. Use internet to research foods and know the calorie value of what you eat. For me at least, it is essential to record every bite I eat. I stopped doing this after several months, and did OK for a while, but have slid back into bad habits over the holidays, so have to go back to more structure for a while.

Good luck and hang in there.

Most important, DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP WHEN YOU DO NOT STAY ON TRACK. Tomorrow is always a bright new day. The good days add up even with some not-so-good days in between.

We are rooting for you, as I am sure you will be for us.
